Vehicle Description
1987 Porsche 911 Cabriolet
Is there any sports car manufacturer that's remained truer to its
heritage than Porsche? The folks in Stuttgart have single-handedly
built an 86-year legacy out of performance-minded engineering,
while designing some of the most endearing cars ever produced. And
today, as one of the most well-respected automakers on the planet,
the brand enjoys a tremendous following.
What do you do when you find out your Porsche factory Turbo Look
Cabriolet doesn't quite have the power and performance you
expected? You build your own rendition of a fire breathing Turbo
Cabriolet! It has had the same owner for the past 27 years and was
always garaged and driven for pleasure only. It is a matching
numbers example that has been regularly maintained and is very
reliable,
Exterior
Porsche Silver metallic covers the almost perfect exterior of this
car and has been meticulously pampered and protected since it
rolled off Porsche's Zuffenhausen assembly line. That body's
professionally finished surfaces are straight, solid and still
possess every bit of the drama and tension Ferdinand "Butzi"
Porsche's original design inspired. Fit and finish are the typical,
high quality stuff you'd expect from a flagship automaker. A large
"whale tail" spoiler adorns the rear engine compartment. 2-piece
modular wheels are seen all around.
Interior
Inside this slick Carrera, it's all about a symbiotic relationship
between cutting edge European performance and traditional 'old
world' luxury. At the center of the car, leather-seats, which show
some patina and wear, are covered in red. Power buttons are on the
outside of each and offer a dizzying array of choices for your
tailored comfort. In front of those seats is the standard Porsche
dashboard in black. At the base of that dash, like-new carpet,
which is protected by thick, "PORSCHE" branded floor mats, anchors
a full-length console and aluminum-trimmed leather booted shifter.
In front of the driver, a standard style steering wheel spins a
colorful Porsche crest. And, throughout the inviting cockpit,
you'll find the usual assortment of luxury and convenience features
that we've all come to expect in high-end automobiles.
Drivetrain
So where would you start but other than Protosport of Pompton
Plains, New Jersey, the renowned Porsche engine builder and
performance gurus of the German marque. A complete mechanical
rebuild began in 1997 beginning with the installation of the
Protomotive Stage 2 turbo, which gets a Garret turbo, larger
intercooler, headers, fuel pressure regulator, software, racing
clutch, boost control and gauges. At completion of the engine
modifications, the horsepower was increased to 485, nearly twice
the factory number. In 2010 a comprehensive engine rebuild was
performed and an upgraded AC system was put in. Just an FYI, the
vehicle's engine upgrade was deemed "bulletproof " by Protosport
and car can be serviced by any Porsche dealer.
Undercarriage
The upgrade did not stop at the power plant. In order to facilitate
the added horsepower, the braking and handling also needed to be
improved. Starting with larger multi piece wheels and tires, Red
Lobster ventilated brakes added stopping power to the front while
factory 930's were added to the back. This included all new
stainless brake lines and all new wheel bearings. Strut brace and
thicker roll bar and short shifter kit would complete the
suspension upgrades.
There is simply too much to list as to how this Porsche has
transformed itself over the owner's history with this "beast." All
comprehensive service records from either Protosport or Factory
dealership receipts since 1993 come with the car as does the
original window sticker, books and Porsche Certificate of
Authenticity. Thousands upon thousands of dollars have been spent
and documented on this German muscle car. Not for the meek at
heart, this heavily modified, stock appearing Cabriolet is as at
home on the track as it is for an enthusiastic drive through the
countryside.
