Vehicle Description
1959 Chevrolet Impala 348 Four-door Sedan Debut model year for
second-generation Impala Correct Tuxedo Black exterior (code 900)
Restored red interior 348 CID Turbo Thrust V-8 engine from a 1961
Chevy with dual exhausts Powerglide two-speed automatic
transmission Safety-Master brakes Own this Vehicle from $449 per
month-call 636-600-4600 Longer, lower and wider was the theme at
Chevrolet in 1959 and the Impala did not disappoint in those
regards. It sported a 1.5-inch longer wheelbase than the previous
year while setting three inches lower and two inches wider.
MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1959 Impala
four-door sedan. This example was made in GM's Kansas City,
Missouri factory (VIN code K). Finished in correct Tuxedo Black
(code 900), the car's paint and trim are in overall very good
order, with only minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The
car's bodywork is straight and the car's chrome bumpers shine
brilliantly in the sun, the engine bay is in satisfactory order and
the battery is in great shape. This car rides on BFGoodrich wide
whitewall tires, size 8.30-14 at all four corners with factory
wheel covers. The tires and wheel covers are all in very good
order. A period correct 348 CID Turbo Thrust V-8 engine breathing
via dual exhausts replaces the original motor. The V-8 is linked to
a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission. Nineteen fifty-nine
models came with improved Safety-Master brakes. Inside, a restored
red interior on the bench seats are in great condition, as is the
complementary carpet and gray headliner. A two-spoke steering wheel
faces the driver while the instrument panel and inner door panels
continue the theme set by the rest of the interior. The
transmission quadrant selector is marked P-R-N-D-G. The G stood for
Grade Retard. The grade retard feature was not designed as a low or
forward acceleration gear but was meant to be used only on long
declines to generate a degree of engine braking. Completing the
interior are a shift lever and a factory AM radio. The 1959
Chevrolet Impala was redesigned. Sharing bodyshells with lower-end
Buicks and Oldsmobiles as well as with Pontiac, as part of a GM
economy move, the Chevrolet's wheelbase was 1-1/2 inches longer.
Using a new X-frame chassis, the roof line was three inches lower,
bodies were two inches wider, and curb weight increased. Its
tailfins protruded outward, rather than upward. The taillights were
a large "teardrop" design at each side, and two slim-wide
nonfunctional front air intake scoops were added just above the
grille. The Impala became a separate series, adding a four-door
hardtop and four-door sedan, to the two-door Sport Coupe and
convertible. Sport Coupes featured a shortened roof line and
wrap-over back window. The standard engine was a 235 CID Blue Flame
I6, while the base V-8 was the carryover 283 CID Turbo Fire V-8.
Optional were a 283 CID Turbo Fire V-8 with 290 horsepower and 348
CID W-series Turbo Thrust V-8 up to 335 horsepower. Standard were
front and rear armrests, an electric clock, dual sliding sun
visors, and crank-operated front vent windows. A contoured hooded
instrument panel held deep-set gauges. A six-way power seat was a
new option, as was "Speedminder," for the driver to set a needle at
a specific speed and a buzzer would sound if the pre-set was
exceeded. Four-door sedan sales in 1959 totaled 525,461 units.
Sedan competition to this Impala in 1959 included Dodge's Coronet
Get-Away Six, Edsel's Ranger Economy Six, Ford Galaxie Town Sedan
with Mileage Maker Six and Plymouth's Belvedere with PowerFlow 6.
