Vehicle Description
Here's a chance to get behind the wheel of a vintage cruiser that's
long on style and features an upgraded drivetrain for both real
world dependability and ample power. This 1953 Mercury Monterey is
a seldom seen early '50s classic that looks sharp both inside and
out, and sports some aftermarket features that make it well-suited
for frequent driving.
The Monterey actually became a stand alone model only about a year
before this 1953 debuted to wage competition in the full size hard
top coupe niche and, after a thorough restyling to mark its
transition, was soon positioned as Mercury's top model line. It's a
very distinctive looking car - vintage and futuristic at the same
time - and bears a much stronger resemblance than most of its
counterparts of the era to the more streamlined coupes that would
come along just a short time later. The Pearl White exterior is a
great fit for this classic - it's got a nice, even pigmentation
from front to back and if you get up close, you can fully
appreciate the pearl texture that adds depth and makes it come
alive in the sun. The double bullet configuration of the beefy
front bumper is an awesome styling cue and while the headlights
have an almost aftermarket, modded look to them, their
semi-frenched appearance was in fact part of the original factory
design. This Mercury's body alignment looks to be in good order and
clean glass surrounds the cabin.
There's a nicely detailed gray cloth interior waiting beyond the
doors, featuring two-tone bench seating in both front and back that
has a couch-like feel comfort and remains in good condition. A
great benefit of this coupe's ample size lies in the interior space
it offers - there's quite a bit of legroom on hand in back and
plenty of shoulder room from side to side. The dash area here is
truly one of a kind - a hooded instrument panel sits on its own
platform at an almost 90 degree angle, flanked by pairs of control
knobs on either side with a thoroughly space-age look to them. An
analog clock at the center looms over the factory AM radio just
below it for a great antique look, while the AM/FM/CD stereo
installed just below it teams with the speakers mounted in the kick
panels for quality sound - and offers Bluetooth connectivity. The
modern climate control system really comes in handy during every
day driving and brings cold or heated air into the cabin as needed
through a collection of underdash vents. The trunk area is spacious
and a full size spare stands by inside in its proper upright
condition.
A freshened drivetrain equips this sharp looking coupe with plenty
of dependable power. The sizable 400 cubic inch V8 holding court in
the engine compartment was recently rebuilt and a tap on the
accelerator gives a sonic hint of its capabilities. It's a sharp
looking powerplant as well, dressed with a uniquely etched chrome
air cleaner over its 4-barrel Holley carb and Edelbrock intake, as
well as a pair of Ford Racing valve covers. It pairs with a 3-speed
automatic transmission that's equally fresh and shifts with
confidence inspiring precision. Front disc brakes help bring this
Mercury to prompt stops as it cruises on its set of ultra sharp 15"
Unique wheels outfitted with Aptany tires.
