HISTORY OF THE WILLYS JEEP CJ-2A
After World War II, Willys-Overland saw a market need for a general purpose Civilian Jeep or “CJ” that could be used in a variety of applications. In 1945, the company unveiled the CJ-2A, which closely resembled its military predecessor with its flat fenders and side mounted spare tire. While the military version featured flush mounted head lights and nine slots for cooling air passage, the 2A was given larger headlights and a seven slot grille; a trademark which can still be seen on Jeeps today. Willys originally marketed the four-wheel drive CJ-2A as a perfect vehicle for the farmer or rancher though many World War II servicemen also remembered the Jeep’s off-roading capabilities during the war. This interest pushed the CJ-2A to record sales. The CJ-2A was produced until 1949 though their rugged simplicity and timeless design still appeals to collectors and enthusiasts across the globe to this day.
