You hear a lot of good things about GM's G-body cars from 1978-1988.  This platform was their last body-on-frame design and included the Buick Grand National and Hurst/Olds 442.  It also included this 1985 Monte Carlo SS which has seen a ton of recent work and upgrades including new paint, a new interior, and a new drivetrain.  Combine this with a straight rust-free body, lowering kit, aftermarket gauges, and working a/c and it makes an amazing package at this price.

This Monte Carlo is a genuine SS (eighth digit of VIN is a “G”).  In 2012 it was repainted, debadged, and blacked out for a very sleek and menacing look.  As with any black paint job, the key to looking good starts with a smooth and straight body.  There is no waviness in the paint, nor are there any dings or dents on the body.  Nice!  The car was also lowered with new springs and shocks from Summit Racing.  It also received new 15” American Racing wheels with BF Goodrich tires; I think they are the perfect look for this car.

The original 305ci 180hp engine (this was considered high output for 1985) has been replaced with a much nicer 350ci setup.  Features include 4-bolt main bearing caps, a roller camshaft, and aluminum cylinder heads.  Compression ratio is a pump-gas friendly 9.2:1.  Additional features include a Professional Products Hurricane intake manifold, Holley Street Avenger carburetor, and MSD ignition.  The 700R4 automatic overdrive transmission was built by ATD Transmission, while the rear end uses an Eaton limited slip differential with 3.73 gears.

The interior has been professionally redone by Hour Glass & Trim Service and emulates a Buick Grand National look.  The bucket seats have all new cushions so they feel as good as they look.  The instrument cluster has been completely redone with Auto Meter gauges, all of which work properly.  The horn, lights, turn signals, and parking brake are all functional.  So is the factory heat, defrost, and air conditioning (which has been converted to R134a refrigerant).  Finally the sound system received a significant upgrade with a Pioneer flip-up head unit with trunk mounted amplifier.

There are plenty of cheap G-body cars on the market that have been abused and neglected.  This is not one of them.  This car has seen $20k worth of attention in recent years, making it one of the nicer and more complete examples that you’ll find.  It’s also a whole lotta fun.
