Vehicle Description
1949 Bentley MK VI Sedan
The Mark VI 4-door standard steel sports saloon was the first
post-war luxury car from Bentley. Announced in May 1946 and
produced from 1946 to 1952 it was also both the first car from
Rolls-Royce with all-steel coachwork and the first complete car
assembled and finished at their factory. These very expensive cars
were a genuine success. Chassis continued to be supplied to
independent coach builders.
Harking back to the days of the Chauffeur driven saloon car, this
Bentley has all the right lines, and look. A beautiful interior in
leather, and black exterior with wide white sidewalls, shows nicely
when automobiles were made by hand. Always having a reputation for
a quality build, Bentley did not disappoint on this MK VI.
Exterior
A tall shining chrome grille greets you in all its glory, and is
topped with the flying B. Re chromed brite work and re mirrored
headlights, gleam against their jet black gloss background that
cover this all steel car. Recipient of an older restoration this
car still presents well. A few frowns are seen when walking around,
in that new gaskets should be installed on trunk lid and cowl.
Also, the front fender side lights seem to be sitting on a bubble
if you will, however there is no rust visible. The front windshield
needs re-sealing, and a slight dent is seen on the rear bumper.
Otherwise the exterior presents nicely.
Interior
In 2011, the consigner had an all new genuine leather interior put
in. In beautiful saddle, this interior looks like the day it was
installed. New carpet, a new headliner, and sun visors all
compliment the leather seats. Front bucket seats, and a full bench
in the rear, have several creature comforts that are essential to a
socialite. Foot rests, a center arm rest, vanity mirrors, and fold
down picnic tables with wonderful book matched veneer tops. Also,
the obligatory pull out ashtrays are within the arms of the rear
seat.
Drivetrain
Sitting in a pristine engine bay, a clean Bentley 4.5 Liter
straight 6, with new electronic ignition, which is housed by the
original stock looking distributor...Look MA! no points or timing
issues!! Consigner states that the transmission and drive train
perform like new due to the 14 month in shop mechanical
restoration. A well explained and written out detailed starting
procedure will get you to the point where you will realize the
engine and exhaust systems are uncommonly quiet when idling or
purring along at highway speeds.
Undercarriage
Trunk drops on either side have been re skinned, so some leftover
areas of metal are still present. Also, some residual metal is seen
in front of what would be newer floorpans above the originals.
There is a section on the rocker panel where the panel has split,
as seen in the photos. Some oiling can be seen, consigner states
residue from a full oiling system that is activated by the driver
and lubricates several points on the car.
This luxury vehicle used for transporting wealthy individuals
around, still shows fairly well. Mechanically it is sound, and some
areas of undercarriage repair are seen, as well as a few issues.
Fall in love with the line of this Bentley by viewing the front and
side angles, and one can see the beauty of a handbuilt
automobile.
