The horsepower wars are alive and well. Even better than that is
the fact that factory hot rods like this Mustang GT500 are not only
blazingly fast, but handle well, stop on a dime, and are safe and
comfortable too. Maybe you actually can have it all. Check out this
car, and you might decide that you can too.
When you look at this car, maybe in low light when you just see the
silhouette, it is amazing how similar it is to the original cars.
The long hood and short trunk cut a familiar line. The iconic
triple taillights are still there, but the bodywork drapes a little
tighter around the mechanicals and reaches closer to the ground
than it used to. Up front there is a body colored bumper now, and
on this particular car there is a Snake on the grill instead of a
Pony. The body itself is coated in Alloy Clearcoat Metallic
(charcoal gray) with bold Silver stripes that run from the bottom
of the front spoiler, up and over the roof to the bottom of the
rear bumper which has dual chrome exhaust tips peeking out from
underneath. A GT500 stripe runs along the rockers between the wheel
wells and another snake appears on the front fenders. 18 inch
5-spoke alloy wheels with SVT wheel centers look great and give the
car a great stance.
Open the door and you will find a comfortable and modern Black
interior. It blends comfort and convenience with the technology
that enables you to pilot this rocket ship at speed. A sculpted
door panel has a comfortable armrest and switches for the power
windows and locks at your fingertips. The high back bucket seats
are leather, power operated, and comfortable. They have pleated
seating surfaces and smooth bolsters to offer support during
spirited driving. The beefy leather wrapped steering wheel with the
Shelby horn button looks and feels like it belongs in a race car,
but it also has cruise control buttons for your convenience. The
gauges include an SVT tachometer, are backlit, and are clearly
visible through the wheel. The center console has a Shaker 500
FM/CD player for your listening pleasure just above the controls
for the ventilation and air conditioning system. The shifter for
the 6-speed manual transmission is in the center console and
changes gears with the flick of a wrist.
Open the hood and you will find a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine
that pumps out 500 horsepower. It is completely and gloriously
stock, unmodified and unmolested. Just the way Ford built it. It's
almost becoming a rarity and hard to find one that hasn't been
tweaked in some way these days. The supercharger sits on top and is
menacingly black while aluminum valve covers have Powered by SVT
embossed into them. You will find the power antilock brake booster
and computer that puts the squeeze on big 4-wheel disc brakes under
the hood as well as the power steering pump that operates the rack
and pinion steering working through a specially tuned strut
suspension with a sway bar. Power flows back through that 6-speed
trans to the rear wheels located by a multilink suspension with
coil springs and a beefy sway bar. The rubber meets the road
through 285/40ZR18 tires in the rear and 255/45ZR18s in the front
all mounted on those great looking Shelby wheels.
This is a low mileage, stock, 500 hp factory hot rod. It is a
comfortable road car and a capable track car at the same time. And
