Vehicle Description
It's the elusive predecessor to the more commonly seen Chevys of
the mid-'50s yet stands out with a rounded, ultra-cool look that's
all its own. This 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe Coupe brought an abundance
of panache to the boulevards and avenues in an era when more and
more people were moving out to the suburbs and looking to commute
to work in style.
With just one glance it's pretty easy to picture this classic,
decked out in its black exterior, dutifully bringing its driver to
the workplace as the country was putting both a major depression
and a World War in its figurative rear-view mirror and embarking on
an economic and industrial upswing. It was only just a scant year
before this '50 saw the light of day that Chevy embarked on its
first restyling effort of the post-War era and made the Deluxe its
flagship, top-tier model. What a successful effort it was, as this
specimen ably illustrates with its unique curvature, tapered hood
and rounded roofline. Noticeably more refined than models coming
just a little before, it's as if, stylistically speaking, it had
two tires firmly planted in the present and two in the future.
Nearly 70 years later, it's looking sharp and is completely intact
- its novel form is sure to turn heads as it is, and a little bit
of freshening up would have it in a truly stellar state in no
time.
Everything is looking sharp inside the doors. The gray interior
really presents well and offers a very compelling vintage driving
environment. The bench seats in both front and back mix cloth and
vinyl to a nice effect and look as if they've seen very little
activity, judging from their plushly padded appearance. Above, the
headliner fits nice and snug and shows no staining, while below a
simple cleaning session will have the carpeting sporting the same
condition. Just in front of the original steering wheel, the dash
is a definite high point, with its nicely painted surfaces and
prominent circular instrument cluster. When you climb inside,
you'll immediately be taken with just how much space surrounds you
- the Deluxe isn't really a huge car, but its interior dimensions
allow for lots of shoulder room and there's all kinds of real
estate to allow your backseat passengers to stretch out as they
ride in style. In that same vein, there's no shortage of luggage
room on hand for future road trips in the rear trunk area, which
sports a full size spare occupying its proper upright position
inside.
Pop the distinctive tapered hood and you'll find an inline 6
cylinder sitting inside the engine compartment, sporting a freshly
cleaned chrome valve cover to match that of the compact air cleaner
to its side. This is a fully functional drivetrain - the engine
fires up promptly and teams with a "3 on the tree" manual
transmission that's shifting securely. It's a true vintage ride and
feel which will surely put a smile on your face and give both you
and your occupants tons of fun memories. A set of sharply badged
wheels bearing the signature Chevy bowtie and wrapped with G78-15
Coker Classic tires completes the look of this one of a kind
classic.
