For Sale: 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL in Kentwood, Michigan

Vehicle Description

In March 1963 the new generation of SL sports cars was launched with the debut of the 230 SL at the Geneva Show. This revolutionary new model replaced the then ageing 190 and 300SL models. Mercedes engineering, together with elegance and practicality, made the pagoda top SL one of the most distinctive designs of its era. During the 60's, Mercedes-Benz refined the model, later fitting the 250 engine and finally arriving at the 280SL. As today, Mercedes-Benz motorcars were never cheap, but superb build quality and sophisticated styling made the 280SL an extremely popular sports car among motoring enthusiasts.

We are proud to offer for only the 3rd time since new this stunning and highly original Pagoda with all the pedigree you would expect. This car has it all from the factory manuals, data card, build sheet, wiring diagram in original pouches, Becker radio manuals, and service records, Hirshmann antenna key, roadster top manual, marketing brochure, original Protect-o-plate and much more! This is what sets a average car apart from a collector car. These all come nicely preserved along with the stunning setup of this car in the ultra-rare Tobacco Brown (423) exterior with the matching Cognac leather seats (140) and then complimented nicely with the brown soft top and matching hard top that fits flawlessly. Throw into the equation the coveted 4spd manual and the factory installed Frigiking A/C and you have the making of a true collector car that anyone in Pebble Beach would be thrilled to represent on the Concourse. These cars have climbed rapidly over the past 5-7 years and continue to see significant jumps in value each year. The market has not cooled on these and low production European classics with the proper pedigree and provenance are only going to continue to see upticks in the market.

The car was sold new out of NJ and then down to Louisiana, then sold to a dealer principal in Ohio where he kept in his private collection for several years before selling to the current owner. It was repainted in 2007 along with restored wood dash, chrome bumpers, tires, and upgraded H4 headlights. The ever important spot welds are evident along with the "notches" in the front headlight assemblies.

This car is gorgeous in all angles, but the real thrill is driving this capable and joyful convertible. The sound and feel while you drive it is unlike anything in its class. Expansive glass and easy entry give this car a unmatched feel with the top on or off as the car hustles thru the 4 gears with ease and exhaust restores the fun factor. The mechanics are all working properly and functioning with ease as drive down the road and you are sure to get noticed in this car as the color and lines are an instant eye catcher.
