The first generation of the Chevrolet Chevelle (1964-1967) created
several iconic American muscle cars. Almost every year of the first
generation is sought after, and the second generation Chevelle is
not any different! 1968 marked the beginning of the second-gen
Chevelle and is an interesting year because it incorporates styling
elements present both in the earlier and later models. The
taillights are reminiscent of 1966, while the fastback styling
looks like 1970!
This particular 1968 Chevelle SS396 is the real deal 138 VIN SS!
Even more, it appears to be featuring all original sheet metal up
top and underneath. The exterior received a full repaint and color
change to a nice medium green. The body is straight and the paint
quality is a average driver quality. The current color does not
appear to be a 1968 Chevrolet color, but is somewhere between
Sequoia Green and Tripoli Turquoise. Originally, this car was
optioned as paint code "G2" which denotes Granada Gold with a black
vinyl top. This car has recently received a new vinyl top and it
sure looks great!
Inside the engine bay, you'll find a period correct 396ci V8 that
is mated to a TH350 automatic transmission. The engine bay is clean
and the engine has plenty of torque for when you want to roast the
rear tires off a muscle car. All that power is transferred to the
ground thanks to a beefy 12-bolt rear end. Stopping power comes
courtesy of manual drum brakes. However, the power steering is a
nice upgrade for this muscle car. The underside is extremely solid
and a quick look on the lift and you'll see how its been left
un-tampered with aside from a recent undercoating to prevent
rust.
Aside from the repaint and engine replacement, there appears to be
a lot of original parts on this Chevelle. Opening the door reveals
an interior that is in overall good condition, but showing its age.
The seats are a little worn from age and use, but not damaged, the
window cranks are showing some aging on the knobs, the aftermarket
radio doesn't work, and the heater controls are loose in the dash.
Drawbacks aside, the interior of this car just feels "right" for
what the car is. This is an interior that could be easily enjoyed
as-is for daily use, and same goes for the exterior.
If you're looking for a real, true, 1968 Chevelle SS with a 396
without breaking the bank, this is the car for you. This would be
an excellent vehicle to cruise around in on a regular basis without
having to worry about a little rain, or if someone will ding it in
a parking lot. Alternately, this is a straight car that would be an
excellent candidate to take to the next level!
