Vehicle Description
1988 Mazda RX-7 Convertible
The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine using an
eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion.
All parts rotate consistently in one direction, as opposed to the
common reciprocating piston engine, which has pistons violently
changing direction. In contrast to the more common reciprocating
pistons designs, the Wankel engine delivers advantages of
simplicity, smoothness, compactness, high revolutions per minute,
and a high power-to-weight ratio.
This Mazda self-described heavy influence from the Porsche 944 for
the body design car, only released 5,000 Cabriolet units to the
USA. Seen here is Guards Red with gray leather interior, and
excellent condition rear glass window convertible top, and a mere
consigner stated 2,500 miles a year since birth.
Exterior
Nicely preserved Guards Red, straight gapped steel panels with
matching crash bumpers, mirrors and badging (look ma no chrome!),
are broken up by a black dent guard belt line running the
circumference of the car. Top presents in very nice condition and
gives the driver the option of a hardtop/soft
top/targa/convertible. Seen is a glass back window in pristine
condition with a rear defroster. Factory BBS Wheels with center
locking hub appear factory! Very nice overall presentation for the
total exterior. The exterior shows some signs of hail damage as
shown in the pictures.
Interior
Gray leather with horizontal stitched tufting in the center with
plain piped bolsters, and speaker inserted headrests wrap the
Recaro buckets. These seats offer a sporty grab you but are very
comfortable. Cracking of the seat leather is evident especially on
the driver's seat. Door panels use the leather as well and show
pioneer speakers for that added sound on the sides. A pioneer sound
system sits in the center console and gives you the option to play
cassettes, CD's, or an AM/FM radio. Enough buttons to keep a 747
pilot occupied. Light gray carpeting covers the floor and accents
the door panels. Power windows, power top, and cruise control can
be seen installed and working.
Drivetrain
The Wankel Rotary 13B (a mere 13ci!) produces 146HP which
translates to 100MPH @ 3400RPM. Consigner states there is no real
redline, but you'll get a notice when you should shift at 7000RPM.
Bolted to the rear of the mill is a 5-speed manual transmission.
Seen on the good condition underside is 4-wheel steering, which
makes cornering just a bit easier.
Overall very nice condition RX-7, mechanically sound, cared for,
and when you compare it to a 944, less than half the price. One
might say more bang for your buck.
