This 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL is a highly original example of one
the best-recognized symbols of opulence and class. So when it comes
with everything from the beautiful paint to cold A/C with an
obtainable price, you know this is a quite a deal.People take
notice when a 560SL arrives. It's a long-established symbol of
distinction, and this one plays into that advantage quite well. The
motor runs great and is happily married to a newly rebuilt
transmission. The interior is in great shape for its age, very
little wear is shown on the seats and dash. This makes a great
highway cruiser as this car was built with high speed cruising in
mind. The tight independent suspension, comfortable interior,
torque monster 5.6L engine and 4 wheel disc brakes make the SL560
an amazing driving experience.
History:
In 1988, Mercedes-Benz shipped its most powerful SL of the decade
to the U.S. in the 560SL. The car was also the heaviest of the
1971-89 R107 SLs body style that Mercedes produced. The new
5.6-liter V-8 engines 227 hp did a fine job of mitigating that
fact. Top speed was much improved (from 110 mph in the 380SL to 130
mph), and the car was quicker from a standstill to 60 mph by about
4 full seconds. The engine was much torquier, too, which greatly
improved the cars dynamics. Likewise, the car received a new rear
suspension and a limited-slip differential to better handle the
added torque and power. Mercedes-Benz also added anti-lock brakes,
leather upholstery, an alarm system, and an air bag, all of which
better suited the cars $48,000 price tag.The 560SL sold well with
average annual sales exceeding 12,000 units.
