For Sale: 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Spyder in Rowlett, Texas

Vehicle Description

Now here is something different. Call it odd, call it a bold experiment, call it rare, call it a Porsche killer, just don't call it "unsafe at any speed". The Corvair is perhaps the most misunderstood and underappreciated car ever produced by an American car company; changing the way the world and the US government viewed the industry.

Controversy aside it is a very cool car that in my humble opinion was way ahead of its time. Its unibody construction platform supported a variety of configurations: sedan, wagon, coupe, convertible, van and truck. With four wheel independent suspension, quick steering, brakes borrowed from the Corvette and its powerful and torquey rear mounted air cooled flat six engine it also made for a competent sports car.

This 1963 Monza Spyder coupe was the high performance version whose 2.4 liter engine is equipped with a factory turbocharger originally good for 150 horsepower. Coupled to a close ratio 4-speed manual transmission this is a real driver's car. Considering the most powerful Porsche of the day didn't even make 100 horsepower car enthusiasts were impressed with the Corvair's capabilities.

This Spyder is mostly original, the exception being the original Carter carburetor has been swapped for a Weber 40 DCOE side draft two barrel that was a common period correct modification. This car has received a lot of mechanical refresh in recent years including brake system overhaul, suspension and bushings and a rebuild of the original turbocharger.

The car starts up easy. Accelerates, shifts, steers and stops very well. The flat six makes good sound and the interior is comfortable and tidy. Instruments and lighting all in working order. It's a very honest and original car indeed. Even with an older paint job that has its share of imperfections it still presents well. It has a great stance and to me is a very soulful car. Don't know what I mean by soulful? Come take a look, take a seat, take a ride and it will all become self evident.

Corvairs are not big money cars. They aren't the most coveted collector cars. The older it gets the less people even know what it is. But I can attest that these little cars will hook you. And for those of us who get it that is part of the mystique that is Corvair.
