The 1968-1970 AMX is widely considered the best car ever made by American Motors. This was no Gremlin or Pacer. Rather, the 2-seat AMX was a terrific sports car with loads of performance, capable of that tangling with Corvettes on the racetrack. To this day it remains an indelible piece of muscle car history.
This 1969 AMX comes from the west coast where it spent almost 30 years with its last owner. It is rust free and includes a folder full of receipts and dyno sheets. It is a real 390ci 4v 4-speed car, in wonderful condition throughout with just under 70k miles. The car was originally Alamosa Aqua but was repainted red with white Go-Pack stripes. All the chrome pieces are bright and shiny and a stainless steel front spoiler has been added.
The 390ci engine was rebuilt in 2010 and now produces almost 400hp – quite a kick in a car this size! Highlights include JE 9.8:1 pistons, dogleg cylinder heads, aluminum intake manifold, and electronic ignition. There are also ceramic coated headers feeding the dual 3” exhaust. The 4-speed transmission was rebuilt in 2011 and has a new Hayes clutch and pressure plate. Power is sent to a Twin-Grip limited slip rear with Moser 1-piece axle shafts.
This AMX is equipped with power steering and power front disc brakes which make it very easy to drive. It has also seen a lot of maintenance over recent years including new ball joints, trunnion bearings, brake rotors, pads, and calipers.
The interior of the car was color changed from platinum to black, to coincide with the paint work. It has the correct Ventilaire bucket seats and unique AMX headliner. It is also equipped with a tilt steering column and retrofitted NOS Rally Pack setup – very nice! Additional equipment includes a remote driver mirror and a nice aftermarket stereo with an underdash graphic equalizer (you don’t see these much any more).
There are plenty of 1960’s muscle cars to pick from, and most of them are very well represented at every car show and cruise night you’ll go to. The AMX is different. It’s a great way to pull away from the crowd and enjoy a spirited driving experience in the process.
