There seems to be an abundance of material available for research, finding parts, history or about anything you are inclined to look for. Most older car aficionados can recognize the early to mid '50's Lincoln coupes, made famous by dominating the Mexican Pan-American Race from 1952 through 1954; however, Lincoln hung on to the older body style for 1955 when other major manufacturers were going more radical with the "wrap around windshield" and fins were coming in to their own. As a result, Lincoln sales suffered for 1955. A base model for the popular '55 Capri Series 60A with just under 12,000 units built, the Custom Sport Coupe Series 60C saw only 1,362 total units for the 1955-year run.
Masterpiece has for sale a 1955 Lincoln Custom Sport Coupe with the factory 341 cubic inch 225 HP 4-Barrel V8, Turbodrive air cooled 3 speed automatic transmission. The car runs very well and is so quiet at idle, you can barely hear it run, even standing beside it. The Turbodrive transmission is Lincoln's first 'in-house' unit, as they used GM Hydramatic up to the '55 model. An air-cooled unit with three planetary gears in the torque converter, it functions as a 2 speed under normal driving conditions, but put the accelerator on the floor, and a mechanical linkage engages an extra low gear upon take off, with the tranny functioning as a 3 speed. Talk about the best of both worlds! And this was in 1955!
Other items it is factory equipped with two separate heater systems, along with two separate controls, one on each side of the steering column. The main heater is in the normal position on the right side of the engine compartment, with the other system located beneath the driver’s floorboard, just inside the rocker panel. The Sport Coupe is basically a stripped-down version of the Capri, with the only power options being power steering, power brakes and vacuum actuated power antennae.
The 1955 Lincoln is rare with such a low number manufactured in ’55 1,362 total and the Custom was only manufactured for one year. This won’t last long, call or email with any questions!
