Vehicle Description
1971 Mercedes Benz 280S Sedan
The W108 is a line of Mercedes-Benz automobiles introduced in 1965,
and included the straight 6 M129 engine, squarish looks, stacked
headlights, a nonintegrated front grille, and double stacked bumper
configuration. Like all Mercedes-Benz cars produced it was like
driving a German Panzer. Not unlike a double hull ship, these cars
were built to last.
Lasting until the present in very good condition, this 280S has
mostly original equipment. Throughout its history, it has some
rebuilt parts, but has strayed with the original configuration with
options and styling. A true rust-free example, the underside of the
car is as nice than the topside.
Exterior
Still housing its original sheet metal, this gray beige coated
beauty is totally rust free, and shining brightly. Dual stacked
chrome bumpers in front and in the rear show some of the redundancy
Mercedes is famous for. Bejeweling the front is a chromed floating
radiator grille, topped by the essential tri-pointed star. This is
chaperoned on either side by a round fog light, as well as a
stacked flanking of dual headlights, shown in the American version
(round duals). All brightwork is intact and shining as well. Period
Mercedes wheels matching the car are on all 4 wheels, and tires
with under 100 miles are mounted on the outside of the wheels.
Design for the period shows very narrow profile trunk and hood
areas of the bodywork.
Interior
Original Black Mercedes hides cover dual front buckets, as well as
arm rests, and rear seats. Excepting a cut in the driver side seat,
the interior seats are otherwise blemish free. Gray and tan pebbled
loop carpeting covers the floor in stain free style, and stretches
from door to door, which has leather covered panels. A few areas of
bunching where adhesive has failed can be seen on the doors. Also,
original wood surrounds to the doors are in need of restoration. A
wood dash with a swooping instrument panel and gauge cluster is
fronted by an original steering wheel. Power windows which are
operational as well as the air conditioning unit under the
dash.
Drivetrain
The Mercedes-Benz M114 engine is a straight-six engine with dual
two-barrel Zenith 35/40 carburetors. The engine displaces 152.4
cubic inches. The engine develops 146hp at 6300RPM, all with a 9:1
compression ratio. Bolted to the back is a 3-speed automatic
transmission.
An original original, here for the taking. Consigner says he's
owned 8 of them, and made the same mistake every time, sold a car
he never should have. But his concession is he always gets another
one either in a different color, or year, but loves the look of the
car. Impressive finish, original car, runs great, and well
maintained.
