Vehicle Description
1996 Mercedes Benz 600 SL
Vintage Mercedes, like this expertly maintained 600SL, are the
perfect combination of old world luxury and universal appeal. Fast,
opulent, stylish and built like a Panzer tank, they're the first
choice of many classic car collectors who like to both show and
drive their classic. Mercedes got it all just right, offering
essentially bullet-proof reliability, satisfying power, and
aggressive good looks. The 600 SL combined all that Mercedes
learned about the R129 chassis cars into a cultural icon that
quietly and confidently told the world its occupants had
"arrived."
With only 40,248 miles on its original powertrain, and no collision
or major body damage whatsoever, this rock-solid Benz is about as
close to driving a brand new 22 year old luxury car as you can get.
And if you're one of those Benz wannabes, this is the ultimate
starter car.
Exterior
Stunning deep black covers the very well aligned panels and doors.
Very few chips or scratches, and virtually dent free, this exterior
is real close to the day it was born. Garaged all its life, no
fading is seen here, not even on the standard hardtop that can be
unhinged by the flick of a button and become an open-air roadster.
A canvas convertible top looks like it had never been put up, until
our expert photographer put it up for the photos. All chrome and
brightwork is in very nice condition and adds the bling to the V12
sing. Chrome wheels wrapped by Goodyear Eagle F1 tires appear to
have very low mileage.
Interior
Two tone Shell color leather wraps electronically adjustable seats
and will accommodate virtually any size driver. A burl center
console houses the power window option, power convertible top, and
hard top release, as well as the suspension adjustment knob, gear
selector, radio, cassette player, and climate controls. The
electronic dash has virtually every monitoring light one could
imagine, and holds on to the analog speedo, clock, tach, oil
pressure, fuel gauge, and engine temp gauges. An integrated car
phone is tucked neatly into the flip up compartment in the rear of
the center console and has a revealing remote keypad in the top of
the dash. Speaking of which, beautiful brown stitched leather
covers the upper part, and plush carpeting on the lower end. That
carpeting floods the floors as well as the rear passenger stowage
area (top down) and trunk (top up). Levers for cruise control,
intermittent wipers, and steering column adjustment sit behind the
burl lacquered steering wheel.
Drivetrain
A 6.0 Liter V12 with an M120 DOHC 48 Valve runs so quietly there
are not enough O's in smoooooooth to describe it. It puts out 385hp
and is backed by a 5-speed automatic transmission. Body
construction Monocoque with front and rear crumple zones and
removable hardtop. Front suspension Independent damper strut with
anti-dive geometry and stabilizer bar. Separate shock absorbers and
coil springs. Negative-offset steering. Rear suspension Independent
5-arm multilink with geometry for anti-lift, anti-squat and
alignment control and stabilizer bar. Separate shock absorbers and
coil springs.
Brakes are 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted 4-wheel disc.
Ventilated front, solid rear brake discs. Antilock Braking System
(ABS) ABS senses impending wheel lock-up under heavy braking and
pumps the front brakes individually or the rear brakes together (to
help maintain stability), as needed, up to 30 times per second to
prevent lock-up and maintain steering ability. Underside of this
car shows clean, and rust free.
A consigner who has fond memories attached to this car, but now
must part with it. This is absolutely one of the nicest SL cars we
have here at Classic Auto Mall, and it is priced very fair. A
German built sports car that is just broken in, many more miles and
fun can be had with it. A closer look will verify this writers'
words.
