Vehicle Description
This Thing is a ton of fun to drive and is always up to having some
fun anywhere any time! Topless, doors off and if you really want to
experience the fresh air blowing through your hair, then fold the
windshield down too! So simple and stress free to use. Originally
designed by the Germans for World War II, then later became
available to the public for 2 short years. Produced in 1973 and 74
only. Designed for all terrain, has a high ground clearance for off
road and beach use. EXTERIOR: One of the best looking Things I have
seen. Great color and the black bumpers and stripes look great.
Bumpers were powder coated. The custom 2 piece 15" Baja steel
wheels and chrome center caps with brand new oversized tires give
it that rugged off road look. Solid body with nice paint. There are
some insignificant nicks and scratches that come from use but
otherwise it looks great. The sheet metal is straight, the doors
fit well too. The windshield easily folds down, doors easily
remove. Complete set of side curtains with steel frames (hard to
come by) and a brand new convertible top. INTERIOR: Very versatile
interior. Black vinyl bucket seats up front and a bench in back.
The rear seats fold down for hauling whatever. It a 5-seater so you
can take the whole family and believe me the kids will be begging
for rides. There are actually drain holes in the floor and a new
marine radio if you did get rained on. There are custom speakers up
front and a set of removable speakers in the rear. A new carpet kit
and console where added modernize the interior. Who doesn't want a
cup holder in a four speed.ENGINE COMPARTMENT: The air-cooled 1600
cc motor runs and drives great. It has a fresh tune up, new fuel
system with new carburetor. New EMPI exhaust. This is same engine
you find in a Bug, Bus,and Karmann Ghia. Parts are readily
available, upgrades are easy and cheap. They are known for
practically running forever with very little maintenance. The
4-speed manual transmission shifts smooth with the EMPI short throw
shifter. UNDERSIDE: The floor pans are in very good shape. The
suspension is also from the Bug and Karmann Ghia, so there are a
lot of upgrades and parts available. The brakes have been redone
with new shoes, hardware, wheel cylinder and hoses. This Thing is
smooth going down the road at highway speeds. The speedo is even
accurate. You can drive it to the beach, to the campsite, or down
the toll road on your next road trip. I have driven everything from
the Batmobile to Duesenbergs and 800 hp muscle cars. The Thing is
as fun as any of those. My daughter begs me to go for rides.
People's reaction is great. You will get more thumbs up and smiles
then with any other car. The best part is- it isn't $100,000. 20%
chance of rain, so what. Gravel road, so what. Get a nick- touch it
up. No worries, just enjoy it!
