Vehicle Description
One of the most desired Porsche models today is the Speedster. It
was a joint venture between Porsche and sole American importer Max
Hoffman. He thought that the market here in the U.S. needed a
cheaper version of the 356. Porsche agreed and built stripped down
versions of the cabriolet, offering just a soft top with no side
windows amongst other changes. Today, this car is widely copied and
has brought an onslaught of companies trying to make the perfect
copy for a fraction of the cost
.
The widebody Speedster offered here was built at D&D Specialty
Cars in Van Buren, Arkansas for Billy Gibbons, of the band "ZZ
Top." 90 percent of the car was completed by D&D Specialty cars
and then shipped to Jack Chisenhall, owner of Vintage Air in San
Antonio and finished up. There were two cars built, the second one
was meant for Frank Beard, drummer for "ZZ Top." The project took
longer than Beard wanted, leaving Billy Gibbons with "Taco Wagons,"
Gibbons decided to sell one and keep one. These cars were intended
to be used for running around town in.
Highlights include 15 inch half-moon steel wheels with BF Goodrich
tires, Dual Webber carburetors, dual exhaust, roll bar, front disc
brakes, JVC&DRVA speakers, real Porsche gauges, air
conditioning, JVC equalizer and AMFM/Cassette. While there are many
of these cars out there, this one certainly stands tall above
many.
