This example was built in Ford's San Jose, California assembly plant on October 7, 1964, about a couple weeks after the new fastback body style was introduced. The car was delivered to the Denver, Colorado region and its original owner bought it in Westminster, Colorado. The second owner bought in 1982 bought it from Phil Long Ford in Colorado Springs, Colorado and later treated it to a bare metal repaint and general correct restoration. Dressed in Tropical Turquoise (code 0), only 1.6% of the total 1965 Mustang production came finishedin Tropical Turquoise! The car's paint and trim are in very good overall condition, with just some minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The car's windows are clear and intact and its lights are intact and haze-free. This pony's bodywork is straight and solid, include those distinctive air extraction vents behind the side windows. The engine bay is very tidy and the battery looks good. The car's shiny bumpers fit tightly to the body and the interior cargo area looks great. This pony rolls on P185/80R13 whitewall tires topped by factory wheel covers. The tires and wheel covers are in satisfactory condition. Early features true to this 1965 Ford Mustang include vinyl along inside rocker panels, squared off '64 sill plates, early door and window handles, carriage bolt bracket for spare tire hold down, threaded base wiper arm posts, early style carpet, Falcon gauge cluster and three-wire heater motor. Under the hood is a 200 CID straight six-cylinder Thriftpower motor, which was Ford's new base powerplant for 1965. Backing the engine is a Dagenham light duty four-speed manual transmission (code 5) and a 3.20 differential (code 3). According to the previous owner, the restoration included rebuilding the engine and carburetor. Updated items include a new radiator, interior upholstery, instrument panel, inner door panels, handles and headliner. There's also a new exhaust system. The air-conditioning compressor was upgraded and converted to R-134 Freon. Inside, the car's white front buckets and rear demi-buckets are in overall great shape with their newer upholstery. The contrasting black carpet is in great condition, as is the white headliner. The original three-spoke steering wheel is present and looks great. Straddling the steering column are the factory Rally-Pac gauges, a tachometer and a clock. The padded metal instrument panel with its woodgrain appliqus is in fine shape, while the inner door panels look good as well. The shifter is in good order and a factory AM radio completes the interior. The standard interior features of the 1965 Mustang included adjustable driver and passenger bucket seats, an AM radio and a floor-mounted shifter in a variety of color options. Ford added additional interior options during the 1965 model year. Ford later offered an under-dash air-conditioning unit and discontinued the vinyl with cloth insert seat option, offered only in early 1965 models. One option designed strictly for fun was theRally-Pac. Introduced in 1963 after Ford's success at that year'sMonte Carlo Rallyand available on other Ford and Mercury compacts and intermediates, the Rally-Pac was a combination clock and tachometer mounted to the steering column. Direct competition to this Ford in 1965 was limited to the Plymouth Barracuda, which launched two weeks before the Mustang. The rest of the Ponycar class, the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Dart, Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird all followed within three years. Documentation include original owner's manual.
