Vehicle Description
Despite the success of their extensive V8 car range, the Ford Motor
Company was in danger of being eclipsed by General Motors and
upstart Chrysler Corporation. There was a massive divide between
the run of the mill Ford vehicles and the insanely expensive top of
the line Lincoln models. As such, 1939 saw the introduction of
Mercury as its very own brand. To signal its serious intent, an
all-new car, sharing no body panels with any Ford or Lincoln, the
Mercury was six inches wider than the 1939 Ford with a 116-inch
wheelbase (four inches longer). To minimize production costs, in
place of developing a division-specific engine, the Mercury was
offered with a 95hp Ford Flathead V8, expanded to 239 cubic inches.
Over 65,800 1939 Mercury cars were sold, at a starting price of
$916 (approximately $16,090 in 2016 dollars).
GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this stunning 1940 Mercury
Eight for your consideration. Not many new cars were built around
WW2, making this Mercury a unique bit of history. Officially called
the 09A in 1940, it was referred to the Eight in marketing
literature because the official name didn't sound very enticing.
This particular model is a rare convertible sedan that features a
folding roof as well as removable B pillars. Having been with its
current owner for over 48 years and having been fully restored,
this car is impeccable inside and out. The body is super straight
and the doors close with a solid thump. The paintwork is amazing
and the chrome has tons of shine. Dual mirrors as well as white
will tires with factory hubcaps round out the classic look. The
interior features lovely tan leather that is excellent. The metal
dashboard is spotless and features cool blue colored accents. Full
instrumentation is present, as is a large clock.
Fitted with the 239cid Flathead V8, this Mercury is a great runner
as well as being very reliable with easy to find parts. The 3-speed
column shifter makes for an easy and comfortable cruiser and the
ride is uncommonly smooth. You won't find another in this
condition. A lovely addition to any collection!
