Vehicle Description
1963 Chevrolet Corvair
Until the 1950s, most American auto manufacturers made one size of
car: large. Imports from Europe such as Volkswagen, Renault, and
Fiat showed that there was a market in the U.S. for smaller cars,
mostly as a second car or an alternative for the budget-minded. Led
by General Manager Edward N. Cole, Chevrolet designed a
revolutionary new car. It was powered by an air-cooled horizontal
six-cylinder engine made almost entirely out of aluminum. The
engine was mounted in the rear of the car, driving the rear wheels
through a compact automatic transaxle. Suspension was independent
at all four wheels. There was no conventional frame; it was the
first Unibody built by Fisher Body and the styling was
unconventional for Detroit, subtle and elegant, with no tailfins or
chrome grille.
This Monza Corvair has a stamped ZF engine, which means it is a
high-performance model. The overall car is showing in good
condition, mechanically sound, and true to 1963 model, excepting
the front hood, which the consigner states is from 1964. A
repainted exterior in Red is in good condition, with a few
blemishes. The underbelly of this car shows only surface rust, with
one floor pan replaced.
Exterior
Red covers the metal and overall exterior of the car and presents
in good condition. Fit and finish is good, body is straight, and
all is in working order. Chrome is a bit pitted, and certain parts
appear to have a gold cast. Consigner states that these parts were
painted on chrome. Interestingly they are blemish free. 13-inch
wheels are covered by standard Chevrolet full wheel covers, and
P175/80R13 tires, which were nearly standard issue for all Corvairs
from this time period. Badging is original and correct excepting,
as stated, the front hood.
Interior
Black vinyl wide bucket seats in front and a bench in the rear show
a few tears, but otherwise in good condition. Standard Corvair dash
is like new, and all knobs and buttons are present, and working.
The Odometer shows 58,052 miles which is believed to be original.
An automatic shift lever is on the steering column, steering wheel
is original, and in good condition. An AM radio is present in the
mid dash and is adorned with horizontal ribbed aluminum to match
the rest of the dash area. Black carpet covers the floor, and a
small vinyl covered compartment with cup holders on either side is
in the middle of the bucket seats.
Drivetrain
An air cooled flat 6-cylinder aluminum engine, 140CI, that produces
102HP resides within the trunk area. A two-speed power glide
automatic transmission is attached and drives a compact automatic
transaxle that has independent suspension. Drum brakes are on all
wheels.
This 1963 Chevrolet Corvair runs smoothly, is in good condition and
shows well as Chevrolet's entry into the compact car market.
Unibody is in good condition and shows little surface rust. A
garaged example with Jetson's-esque design, this car is ready to
drive away, and take you back to the future!
