Wholesome. Timeless. For classic car buffs, these adjectives are worthy goals but hard to find in the real world. Welcome to MotoeXotica Classic Cars, where we are pleased to present this true early1964 Ford Mustang Convertible finished in rare Sunlit Yellow! Built in Ford's Dearborn, Michigan factory on May 14, 1964, a month after the car launched at the World's Fair, it is the embodiment of those three words. Finished in its factory correct Sunlight Yellow (code V), a color only offered in1964 . The car's paint and trim are great overall condition, with only minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The pony's windows are clear and intact while its lights are haze-free and look good. This Mustang's bodywork is straight and solid, the black, vinyl, power-folding top is in very good order, the car's engine bay is extremely tidy, the battery looks new and the chrome blade bumpers look fantastic and fit tightly to the body. Under the hood is Ford's base engine, a 170 CID Thriftpower inline six-cylinder (vin code U) with a one-barrel carburetor, mated to a three-speed manual transmission (code 1) with a 3.50:1 differential (code 5). Mustangs did not get any more simple or wholesome than this one and this car is one of about 32,900 examples fitted with a six-cylinder engine during its first year. This car rolls on General American whitewall tires, size 185/75R14 at all four corners. Each tire wraps around a steel wheel topped by a factory wheel cover. Inside, the standard black crinkle vinyl (code 96) interior is in overall great condition. The front buckets and rear bench are in very good shape, as is the matching black carpet while the three-spoke black and chrome steering wheel looks very "groovy." The black, padded instrument panel and inner door panels are in very good order and echo the rest of the interior's theme. Completing the interior is a factory AM radio and the Ford Falcon gauge cluster that is only found in the early Mustangs. Since it was introduced four months before the normal start of the 1965 production year and manufactured alongside 1964Ford Falconsand 1964Mercury Comets, the earliest Mustangs are widely referred to as the 1964 model. Nevertheless, all "1964" cars were given 1965 U.S. standardVINsat the time of production, and - with limited exception to the earliest of promotional materials- were marketed by Ford as 1965 models. The rush into production included some unusual quirks, such as the horn ring bearing the 'Ford Falcon' logo covered by a trim ring with a 'Ford Mustang' logo. These characteristics made enough difference to warrant designation of the 121,538 early versions as "1964" Mustangs, a distinction that has endured with purists. The low-end model hardtop used a "U-code" 170CIDstraight-six engine borrowed from the Falcon, as well as a three-speedmanual transmission. Standard equipment for the early 1965 Mustangs included black front seat belts, a glove box light and a padded dash board. Production began in March 1964 and official introduction following on April 17 at the1964 World's Fair. Documentation includes a copy of Chilton's Mustang Repair Guide from 1965 to 1973. Competition to this Mustang in 1965 was limited to Plymouth's Barracuda, which launched 16 days before the Mustang.
