The Fiat 600 was the popular successor to the Fiat Topolino and was
Italy's answer to the VW Beetle's massive worldwide success. The
600 was Engineered by Dante Giacosa, whose career includes a
variety of fantastic road and racing cars for Fiat and Cisitalia.
The basic design was somewhat similar to a Beetle, but with some
key differences: a water-cooled inline engine, unibody
construction, and it was a bit more compact overall. A clever
layout allowed space to seat four and even include a small trunk
area.
The car was incredibly efficient and versatile and few automakers
of the 1950s and 1960s could compete with Italian manufacturer
Fiat. The 600 was idea for economy-minded post-war suburban life,
and their design was universally appealing.
