Vehicle Description
With the dramatic look draped over its vintage beefy form, this
1950 Mercury Eight sedan looks as if it's jumped off the pages of a
graphic novel to arrive in the present day. This seldom-seen,
spacious cruiser has come through the years in solid fashion and
sports a very strong foundation - it's unusually well-priced and
with just a little TLC, it will make the jump from high impact
classic to show stopper.
You don't come across Mercury sedans dating back anywhere near as
early as this '50 very often, let alone one that demands attention
like this one. It was an appealing classic sedan to begin with, and
some inspired customization work has left it with an aggressive
front grille that sits below its wide set headlights and flames
that roar backward from its front end as if it's pierced a fiery
wall. Its brown metallic is a unique shade that really comes alive
when exposed to the sun. Those extensive flames are no mere decals
- they're painted on and have a nice, consistent texture to them.
When it comes to vintage sedans, few styling cues have a "cool"
factor that can equal suicide doors and the ones on display here
look awesome, featuring a thick swath of chrome trim that runs
across them and back to the rear fender. Take a look in back and
you'll see some inspired customization work there, as well. The
rear wheel covers obscure the top half of the whitewall tires, and
the monochrome look of the decklid area as it transitions to the
rear bumper provides a very effective custom look.
Climb in through the front half of those suicide doors and you'll
see that the tan interior features a nice blending of vinyl and
cloth and is in very clean condition. A little well-focused
attention on some of the peripherals will transform it into a
top-notch driving environment. The bench seats in front and back
sport very sharp accents and, with their ample padding and nearly
sofa-like proportions, are very comfortable. A generously-sized
tachometer sits just behind the factory steering wheel on the
column, and just beyond, the instrument cluster features intricate
chrome trim and clear looking gauges which will need just a little
work to get them back online. This classic is also equipped with an
aftermarket air conditioning system - vents are securely positioned
under the dash and a compressor sits under the hood - that, when
brought back to life, will provide welcome comfort for you and your
passengers. As far as classic restoration work is considered,
neither of these fixes is particularly extensive. The spacious
trunk area in back sports a full-size factory spare.
Raise the flamed hood and you'll find a 305 cubic inch V8 waiting
in the engine bay, sporting a 4-barrel Edelbrock carb underneath a
matching chrome air cleaner. It starts up easily and sends a nice
exhaust note out of its Flowmaster dual exhaust to accompany its
surprisingly smooth ride. The engine bay has come through the years
in stock configuration, but it's still tidy and well-organized.
Power brakes, featuring discs up front, bring this sizable sedan to
a stop with minimal effort as it cruises the boulevard on its 15"
moon-style rims outfitted with white wall tires for a properly
vintage look. The undercarriage looks unusually clean and straight
for a car of this era, with solid looking floor pans and straight
frame rails. From that vantage point you can also see the sturdy
X-bracing that gives this substantial Mercury its structural
rigidity.
