For Sale: 1970 Dodge Charger in Charlotte, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

Thoughts of the legendary Charger immediately bring to mind a near perfect blend of basic transportation and big performance. See, back in the '60s when muscle cars packed on premiums to increase margins, Dodge continued to honor the tenets of the cheap speed movement. In fact, the second-generation Charger was carefully redesigned to stay firmly grounded in the realm of affordability. And today, almost 50 years in to the future, that adherence to principle fosters a remarkable line-up of classics that, because of their purity, seem to perpetually gain value. Take this brilliantly dapper coupe for example. Combining 528 cubic inches of aluminum Hemi with an A727 ProRace 3-speed, a full Hotchkis suspension and seven years of rotisserie restoration, it's an excellent example of why vintage Detroit metal will always be incredibly appealing. Shopping for an unadulterated embodiment of the quintessential muscle car? Take a long look at this impressive MoPar!

SO SUBLIME IT STEALS THE LIMELIGHT

Mixing sultry Sublime paint with bold Black and White vinyl, this classic Charger began life as a spry 318 car that was custom-ordered by a Chrysler assembly line employee. After an easy 20K miles, that worker passed the Dodge to its second owner: a dedicated enthusiast who would enjoy the car for close to two decades. Toward the end of that stay, the coupe's solid, all-original body was subjected to a 7-year rotisserie restoration that combined handsome factory aesthetics with ultimate pro-touring drivability. That 3,000-hour build, professionally completed in late 2015 by Westmont, Illinois' Body Language, covered fully stripped metal in correct Sikkens Sublime 2-stage. With fit good and finish slick, an original vinyl roof was complemented with a white tail stripe. And today, this classic rolls as one brazen bruiser that mixes timeless design with world-beating performance!

Replaced during its thorough build, every bit of this MoPar's bright ornamentation presents extremely well. At the front of the car, a chrome-trimmed grille hangs an off-set "Charger" script between hidden headlamps and amber parking lights. Behind that grille, a scalloped hood centers bold "HEMI" callouts between small turn indicators and crisp glass that's framed in straight stainless. At the sides of that glass, a "Charger" branded profile centers a correct mirror and traditional door handles between clean marker lamps, tidy wheel lips and an ornate Pit Stop fuel filler. And at the back of the car, a chrome valance centers a fourth "Charger" script between factory taillights, a guarded bumper and an aftermarket spoiler.

528 > 426

Check the body-matched engine bay and you'll find 528 cubic inches of Hemi legend that, thanks to the power-hungry pros at Morton Illinois' Chenoweth Speed and Machine, twists a massive 668 horsepower into 650 lb./ft. of neck-snapping torque! At the top of that World Aluminum block, a Scorpion Racing Products throttle body threads wind in to a steady stream of fossils that's provided by Holley sequential fuel injection. That prefect mixture of air and fuel, tweaked through an in-car touchscreen controller, floods a slick Mopar intake. That intake funnels speed in to aluminum Mopar Performance/Edelbrock heads that are dressed in polished Keith Black breathers and Hemi-themed valve covers. Those heads cap a forged JE crank, which spins forged Eagle rods under a custom-grind roller cam. At the front of that cam, a billet FAST Dual-Sync distributor sequences MSD 6AL ignition between an MSD Blaster II HVC coil and loomed MSD FireCore plug wires. At the front of those wires, a polished serpentine drive spins a Jones Racing power steering pump opposite a polished MSD APS alternator. Cooling is provided by a big Be Cool radiator, which rides between a billet water neck, dual SPAL puller fans and a snazzy a Be Cool expansion tank. Exhaust roars through coated TTI headers. And details like FAST fuel components, a billet Milodon oil pump, a spry Optima battery and an old school Chrysler washer reservoir cement this Dodge's status as a well-blended piece of choice mechanical art.

A TRUE PRO-TOURER

Park this B-Body on a lift and you'll find solid, Gloss Black floors that frame a roster of top-notch upgrades. Behind the Hemi, an A727 ProRace 3-speed, sourced from Cope Racing Transmissions, makes excellent use of a billet steel front drum, thick lug pump gears and a Cope Racing 727 Ultimate Sprag. Behind that kit, a powder-coated Strange Dana 60 utilizes an S-Trac limited-slip differential and 3.54 Spicer gears to put the power to the pavement. That killer drivetrain pushes a Hotchkis Total Vehicle System suspension. The aforementioned Jones Racing steering pump powers a quality Borgeson gearbox. Quick power is countered by quick stops thanks to green-tinged Viper discs. An impressive soundtrack is funneled through 3-inch TTI pipes, which center an X-shaped crossover in front of welded Dynomax mufflers and polished TTI tips. All that proven hardware rolls on machined Magnum 500 replicas, which spin 245/45ZR17 Toyo Proxes in front of 315/35R17 Toyo Proxes. And everything, from this coupe's finned transmission pan and Strange inspection cover to its custom fuel tank and deep-sump Milodon oil pan, appears clean, well-thought and thoroughly upgraded.

A TRUE ORIGINAL

Counter to today's obsession with technology and convenience, it seems old school American muscle cars only needed simple stitching, a bit of stainless trim and essential instrumentation to strike a perfect balance of 'instantly classic' and 'perpetually cool'. Open this Charger's solid doors and you'll find a mostly-original cockpit where carefully re-covered buckets meld seamlessly with a stylish, no-nonsense driving environment. In front of those thrones, a monochromatic dash hangs rebuilt Rallye gauges beside correct Chrysler Solid State audio. Beneath that radio, a wood-trimmed console frames a Chrysler Slap Stick shifter. Like-new carpet floats Charger-themed floor mats toward surprisingly weather-free door panels. In front of the driver, an original Rim Blow Steering Wheel laps a contrasting Dodge center piece. And behind the cockpit, a restored trunk features an original mat and correct space saver spare tire.
