Vehicle Description
In the world of collector cars, some classics tend to overshadow
their peers. If you're shopping Chevelles, you're probably looking
for an LS6 Super Sport. If you're shopping Mustangs, you're
probably looking for a first-generation coupe. And if you're
shopping Chargers, you're probably looking for something between
1968 and 1970. That's a somewhat sad, but beneficial, phenomenon.
Sad because it means a lot of great cars just don't get the respect
they deserve. Beneficial because a lot of fine metal, like this
boss Charger resto-mod, can be purchased for very reasonable
prices. As charming as it is cool, this sweet fastback wraps sporty
red, white and black aesthetics around 434 cubic inches of Super
Commando V8. Looking for the perfect way to grab a choice classic
and enjoy every aspect of the hobby? Time to turn some heads in an
old school MoPar!
APPEARANCE
Much nicer than when it rolled off Chrysler's storied assembly
lines, this slick B-Body is the beneficiary of a detailed,
ground-up restoration that wrapped vivid 2-stage around one of the
best profiles to come out of Auburn Hills. That profile shows no
signs of significant repair, suggesting it was a straight,
trouble-free canvas before the car's metamorphosis began. Fit and
finish is good enough to make ridged panels line up exactly right.
And overall, this fully sorted Dodge is a unique representation of
a more luxurious era of Motor City mayhem!
Since the second-generation of Dodge's most famous muscle car
championed brute force, the marque isn't often associated with
luxury and opulence. Sure, Detroit was "recovering" from years of
producing decked out cars. But this Charger's detailing gives it a
powerful appearance that simply can't be matched by the minimalist
creep that inoculated the late 1960s. At the front of the car, a
tough pot metal grille centers a red-tinged fratzog between a broad
bumper and rotating headlights. Behind that grille, a "DODGE"
branded hood leads factory-tint glass that's seated between
polished frames, polished rails, an ornate mirror and racy
"Charger" scripts. At the sides of that glass, stainless rocker
guards trace increasingly prominent sculpting, which parallels
painted fender toppers and factory door handles. And at the back of
the car, a guarded bumper traces a "C H A R G E R" branded tail
lamp, which is centered under a second red-tinged fratzog.
POWER
With incredible power, and enough torque to turn wide tires into
abstract asphalt art, this Dodge's 434 cubic inch Super Commando V8
is a buff MoPar monster that easily transitions from smooth to flat
out hairy! At the top of the bored and stroked mill, a
stainless-capped air cleaner centers an oversized filter on a big
Holley carburetor, which drops a nice mix of fuel and air in to a
proven Edelbrock intake. At the sides of that intake,
free-breathing heads bridge the gap between finned valve covers,
fitted with polished caps, and cast exhaust manifolds. Those heads
cage stout 10 to 1 compression, which is created with the help of
an upsized cam. Electronic ignition is sequenced through an MSD
coil, a fresh distributor and quality Taylor Spiro Pro wires. A
March serpentine drive spins billet pulleys in front of a polished
alternator, a polished water pump and polished power steering
components. And cooling is provided by a snazzy aluminum radiator
that centers a polished cap and a paired expansion tank between an
electric pusher fan and a body-matched pulley fan. While this
mill's main purpose is to go straight at a very high rate of speed,
it's still very impressive to look at. Charcoal Gray paint slinks
across the whole engine, and everything from the car's polished
brake booster to its old school Chrysler washer tank is well
planned and well executed.
DRIVABILITY
Toss this Charger on a lift and you'll find a Satin Black
undercarriage that features a roster of proven components.
Motivation comes courtesy of a reliable A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed,
which spins a proven 8.75-inch axle that's fitted with a Sure Grip
differential and 3.55 gears. Modern power steering leads a factory
front-clip. At the corners of the chassis, power-assisted calipers
squeeze four vented rotors. Exhaust rolls from the aforementioned
manifolds in to aluminized pipes, which are threaded through dual
Xlerator Turbo Mufflers. And at the corners of the car, handsome
American Racing wheels spin 245/45ZR18 Nitto NT555s in front of
275/40ZR18 Nitto NT555s.
COMFORT
The best part of first-generation Chargers is their spectacular
cockpits. Just look at this Dodge's crisp combination of Black and
White upholstery! Not only does it appear to be ripped straight out
of a 1960s show car, it creates a super rare four bucket sedan
layout that's very common in luxury cruisers. At the front of the
car, a 2-tone dash wraps intricate electroluminescent telemetry in
classy stainless trim. At the base of that dash, a spectacular
console surfs a curved shifter between fade-free carpet,
Charger-themed mats and retrofitted Memphis Audio speakers. Pleated
seats perfectly complement bright visors, a 2-tone headliner and
stainless-trimmed door panels. In front of the driver, a
wood-rimmed wheel spins speed-drilled spokes. And the passengers
store gear in a fully restored trunk.
