Vehicle Description
1955 Ford Thunderbird
In 1953 at the Motorama display Chevrolet unveiled the Corvette
which was developed due to the popularity of European sports cars.
Ford decided they needed to get in the game so a year later in 1954
they premiered their first 2 seater car in over a decade at the
Detroit Auto Show. Later that year in September the very first
Thunderbird rolled off the line and in October went on sale. It is
reported that only 10,000 Tbirds were planned to be produced but
orders came in quickly bringing that number up to 16,155. In fact,
3500 orders were placed within the first 10 days of the car being
available. Although the cars were built as a response to the
Corvette, Ford focused more on driver comfort than speed while
still wrapping it up in a sporty package. The look must have been
popular because TBirds continued to be 2 seater sports cars all the
way until the 11th generation in 2002 which was also one of the
first modern vehicles based on a retro look that has since become a
huge trend with car manufacturers. This 55 Thunderbird is a nicely
maintained car that runs really well. It has been repainted in the
past and sports a bright Red paint job with a nice shiny finish. It
does have the fiberglass removable top that seals up nicely and is
easy to remove. The fender skirts were standard equipment on these
cars and although many have lost them over the years this one still
wears them. The chrome on the car has a brilliant shine and all of
the correct factory pieces are there. These cars look perfect with
wide white wall tires so that is what you will see under all four
corners wrapped around the original style wheels with spoke
hubcaps.
Moving these Tbirds down the road is the longest lived of the Y
Blocks which was the 292 V8. These motors were used in many Ford
vehicles and continued to be used all the way into the 60's. This
one runs great and doesn't have any issues. It has the factory look
with Thunderbird valve covers and the correct style air cleaner.
The 6 volt system is still in place but an 8 volt battery has been
installed along with a 6 volt alternator. Those that have messed
around with 6 volt systems before will recognize this as a very
common way to improve starting. A quick disconnect was also added
at the battery to help you easily avoid having it discharge should
you park it for an extended amount of time. The car has a nice
sound and the factory dual exhaust routed through the rear bumper
guards is still in place. Paired with the motor is an automatic
transmission system that moves through the gears smoothly.
The interior is completed in a two tone Red and White and
everything has the stock original appearance. The upholstery is in
good condition and it has lap belts in place on the power bench
seat. All of the engine turned style trim is there and everything
from the steering wheel to the gauges looks original and is in good
shape. The engine features Red carpeting and houses a matching
spare with white wall tire. It even has the factory jack
instructions still taped in place!
These Thunderbirds are great cars and have the total 50's look.
