HI-PERFORMANCE, REAL COPO L78 427 425HP Camaro
The 1969 Chevrolet COPO Camaro is one of the most highly
sought-after Camaros in the badge's history, and this
multiple-award-winning example is one of the best. A
no-expense-spared restoration completed by Custom Classics Auto
Body and Restoration in Island Lake, Illinois, it represents the
high watermark in 1969 production Camaros with its exclusive list
of factory performance equipment assembled under Central Office
Production Order No. 9561.
Conceived by Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Chevrolet dealer and racer
Don Yenko, the COPO 9561 package was centered on the L72 427/425 HP
big-block Mark IV engine from the 1966 Corvette. Yenko had begun
lobbying Chevrolet for a factory production 427 Camaro in late
1966, but management consistently rebuffed him, so he continued
doing his own transplants for customers at his dealership. In 1969,
Chevrolet racing guru Vince Piggins finally came to the party,
selling 427-powered Camaros to Yenko and several other dealers
through the COPO pipeline.
Discovered in a Wisconsin barn in the mid-2000s, this 1969 COPO
9561 Camaro is equipped with a 512-casting iron block. It has been
rebuilt to factory-original L72 specifications, including that
engine's forged internal rotating assembly, solid-lifter camshaft,
high-flow heads and large-bore Holley 4-barrel on an aluminum
Winters intake manifold. The completed engine includes the correct
A.I.R. pollution controls and is cooled by the curved-neck
heavy-duty radiator that is also part of the 9561 specification. A
Muncie M21 close-ratio 4-speed and BE-code heavy-duty 12-bolt
4.10:1 Positraction rear end are also featured. Correctly finished
as original in Lemans Blue paint and black interior, the car is
equipped with power steering, power front disc brakes, front and
rear spoilers, the Style Trim Group, ZL2 special ducted hood and an
AM radio. This truly exceptional COPO has been certified by Camaro
Hi-Performance and its 2009 MCACN Concourse Gold and 2010 American
Camaro Association Bowtie Class Gold awards make it a worthy
candidate for any great collection. PLEASE CALL AHEAD TO VIEW THIS
