Report The advertising text was minimal, stating simply, "With 427
inches, who need adjectives?" The year 1966 heralded some
remarkable changes in Detroit, but 7 liters of big-block was the
real eye-opener for the second-generation Corvette. The stunning
convertible here has benefited from a complete nut-and-bolt
refreshing and still retains its matching-numbers L36 427/390 HP
Turbo-Jet engine. With the Mako Shark prototypes already being
worked on by company stylists, the overall body of the
second-generation Sting Ray did not radically change for this model
year. Receiving new trim logos, the egg-crate grille
reconfiguration and light touches in places like the wheel covers
was the major extent of it. The roof vents were eliminated, and the
back-up lights became standard equipment. Though changes were
subtle, the public was still thrilled by this legend, outselling
the 1965 versions by almost 15 percent, and the availability of 427
CI was surely a big part of that attraction. Here, the L36 engine
features 10.25 compression and an easy-to-tune hydraulic camshaft
design, all tucked down beneath the special hood treatment reserved
for big-block installations. Its non-silenced air cleaner and
side-pipe exhaust pipes make a raucous statement of performance,
and the powerplant is backed by the M21 close-ratio 4-speed
transmission and a stout 4.11 differential layout, a driveline
surely created for bursts of excitement. A spectacular tri-color
package, this extremely attractive car is covered in Rally Red with
a white convertible top and contrasting black vinyl interior. Among
the optional equipment on this car is the scarce V74 traffic hazard
switch, plus the AM/FM radio with power antenna, the wood-design
steering wheel and the shifter consolette. Touching the ground are
goldline bias-ply tires equipped with 15-inch spinner-design
hubcaps, a crowning touch to its street legacy. So, yes, we used
some adjectives to describe this white-topped 427 CI convertible in
hot red paint, but you will be the one to enjoy it beyond its
appearance; then, you can choose your own adjectives.
