Introduced in fall 1969 for the 1970 model year, the Challenger was
one of two Chrysler E-body cars, the other being the slightly
smaller Plymouth Barracuda, positioned to compete against the
Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird in the upper end of the pony
car market segment.
The Challenger's wheelbase is two inches longer than the Barracuda
and it features a more luxurious interior as did the 1967 Mercury
Cougar, likewise a bigger, more luxurious and more expensive pony
car aimed at affluent young American buyers.
This fine example was restored by well known and respected
Restorations by Julius and the complete nut and bolt restoration
was completed about 12 months ago.
The Challenger was originally born as a Sub-Lime or FJ5 convertible
with a Black Top, Black Bucket Seats, Console, AM Radio, Power
Steering and Power Disc Brakes.
The original 318ci engine was replaced by a mighty 472 Cubic Inch
Stroker with an Era Correct 1966 Block, Mopar Performance Aluminum
Heads and correct Hemi Carburetors fitted on top of an original
Dual Quad Intake Manifold.
The Sure-Grip Posi-Traction Rear End is fitted with 3:55 gears and
the car is complemented with Rally Wheels wrapped in 235/60/15
rubber upfront and 255/60/15 in the rear.
A custom Tachometer was fabricated and added to the dash
cluster.
