Vehicle Description
History
The Pontiac GTO is an automobile that was built by Pontiac in
generations from 1964 to 1974 model years, and by GM's subsidiary
Holden in Australia from 2004 to 2006.
The first generation GTO was a muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s
era. Although there were earlier muscle cars, the Pontiac GTO is
considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic
automakers offering a variety of competing models.
General Motors redesigned it's a-body for 1968, with a unique
feature that was the body-color Endura front bumper. It was
designed to absorb impact without permanent deformation at low
speeds. Pontiac touted this feature heavily in advertising, showing
hammering at the bumper to no discernible effect.
Though a rare option, a GTO could be ordered with "Endura delete",
in which case the Endura bumper would be replaced by a chrome front
bumper and grille from the Pontiac Le Mans.
We have one of those incredibly rare 1968 Pontiac GTO's, here at
Skyway Classics, that were special ordered with less than two
thousand ever produced in 1968 with the rare option Endura delete.
Pontiac gave customers the options to order the car with Endura
delete . It deleted the poly front end treatment and instead came
with the chrome metal front end. This car also has a special order
paint color, and both are documented by the PHS documents.
Features & Options
This is a real 242 VIN GTO (see the pics.) It is a low mile
restored GTO showing just 88,992 actual miles. The restoration
included painting it back to the original factory Solar Red and put
on a new Black Vinyl roof!
It has its original numbers matching 400 CID V8 that has also been
freshly rebuilt and shifts thru its column mounted 3-Speed
automatic transmission (also a rare option) with 2.93 gears in the
rear. The engine compartment is also detailed and painted back to
much like the way it was on the showroom floor back in 1968. The
engine and transmission are both rebuilt with less than 1,000 miles
since rebuild.
The GTO rides on period correct 15" Cragar SS wheels and has Power
Brakes, Power Steering, Anti-Theft System, and radial tires.
The interior of this rare GTO has the correct Parchment Vinyl
bucket seats, seat belts, vinyl interior, GTO floor mats, black
carpet, which has all been restored if needed or left original.
The current owner says that this GTO has all its original sheet
metal and it is incredibly solid, runs and drives great, starts
right up and has a true muscle car sound with her dual exhaust
exiting out the rear.
