1964 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
History
The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-sized automobile which was produced
by Chevrolet in three generations for the 1964 through 1978 model
years. Part of the General Motors (GM) A-Body platform, the
Chevelle was one of Chevrolet's most successful nameplates.
The Chevelle was the U.S. auto industry's only all-new car for 1964
and was positioned to fill the gap between the small Chevy II and
the full-sized Chevrolet models.
The Chevelle Super Sport, or SS represented Chevrolet's entry into
the muscle car battle. Early 1964 and 1965 Chevelles had a Malibu
SS badge on the rear quarter panel.
Why This Car Is Special
The 1964 SS Chevelle we have here at Skyway Classics has the Super
Sport package that was available on the upscale Malibu two-door
hardtop and convertible models. The option added special exterior
brightwork with SS emblems and the 14-inch full-disc wheel covers
from the Impala SS. Inside, the vinyl bucket-seat interior featured
a floor console for models equipped with the optional Muncie
aluminum four-speed-manual instead of the standard three-speed
manual. Malibu SS also came with a four-gauge cluster in place of
engine warning lights.
This SS is a complete frame off restoration with no expenses
spared. Take a look at the photos and you will see this is a
magazine quality car all the way down to the Vin # on the
frame!
Mechanical
In 1964, the Chevelle could be ordered with the division's
327-cubic-inch V8 with 250 hp with a four-barrel carburetor which
ours came with. The numbers on the engine verify this as a #3782870
Small Block V8 327 cubic inches.
Our SS also has a variety of other factory features and options
such as J50 Power Brakes, M20 4-speed transmission, N40 Power
Steering, white was tires, and spinner hubcaps. The detailed engine
compartment showcases the factory stock appearing 327 engine with
correct valve covers, air cleaner, intake, and all the belts and
hoses.
Interior
The restoration included touching and either replacing or restoring
every piece in it. It has a perfect red bucket seat interior with
A37 Seat Belts, a B70 Padded Dash, a Z01 Option that had a No Glare
Mirror, Outside Rear View Mirror, 2 speed washers & wipers, the Z02
option with Push Button Radio, Auxillary Speaker, and a rear
interior.
The carpet and door panel continue the red theme and compliments
the redone red dash and center console housing the 4-speed
shifter.
Exterior
The black paint job on our SS is great as is all the chrome,
bumpers, trim, and everything else. The emblems let you know this
is SS and the whole car looks even better than the day it left the
dealer showroom.
