Vehicle Description
If you love classic T/As, it's time to pay attention. This 1981
Pontiac Firebird Trans Am has all the best stuff you want - T-tops,
the original turbocharged V8, plenty of docs, and the sought-after
WS6 suspension package. So when a survivor-grade classic like this
is up for grabs, you know you want to be first in line.
Black Trans Ams are fun, and so if that's your style, there are
others at Streetside that will be more to your liking. But if
you're someone who likes to stay bold but play it a little
smoother, this factory-correct Barclay Brown should be exactly why
you're looking for. It's like the difference between ordering black
coffee and a cappuccino. In fact, this coupe does feel exactly like
a special blend, because they made less than 800 T/As in this color
for 1981. This paint is even believed to be all original to the
car. The exceptional level of gloss and shine it still radiates is
a testament to what kind of care this car has received for nearly
four decades (which is easy to believe with only 44k actual miles.)
And what also helps grab attention is the gold trim that's on
everything, including the rub strips, under the rear spoiler, ad on
the special turbo wheels. Also, of course, no one can escape the
clutches of the bold and iconic hood bird that's front and
center.
The interior is just as well preserved as the exterior, and that's
a good thing, because this came loaded from the factory. The camel
interior is a great complementing color to the exterior because it
nicely coordinates with the tone of the brown. And let's face it,
when you have a T-top T/A like this you're going to want to keep it
open to the world. Another feature to have when the T-tops are out
is the set of cloth bucket seats. After all, you'll never be afraid
to hop into this one wearing shorts. Plus, the air conditioning has
been converted to R134a to make sure your wind-in-the-hair
experience is a cool one even in the summertime. And while you'll
be amazed at how nice the whole original presentation is, don't
forget to check out all the features like power windows, power
locks, electric rear defogger, cruise control, and the original
AM/FM stereo. This is a driver's classic, so you get to face iconic
components like the Trans Am's special three-spoke steering wheel,
cool machined aluminum dash, and the full gauge package with
tach/clock combo. And while '60s Pontiacs were famous for having
the tach on the hood, this special more modern T/A gives you the
status of the turbo in lights.
Lift the hood for a very unique presentation. The 4.9-liter
turbocharged V8 motor was only offered for two years, and fans
instantly identify this setup with the offset air topper that makes
room for the turbocharger. On a car so well preserved thus far,
you'll be glad to know that this very correct-looking engine bay
also contains the original numbers-matching motor. More than just
historical, this is a well-maintained package, that includes
receipts for a recent tune-up including plugs, fluids, brake pads,
and radiator re-core. These unique T/As were a cool addition to the
lineup when the big torque of the V8 would get you off the line and
the turbo offered an extra hit of power in the mid-range. Plus,
this comes with great handling thanks to the desirable WS6 package.
It includes a larger sway bars, tighter steering box ratio, and
four-wheel disc brakes. This option made the Trans Am the favorite
of most automotive magazines back in the day. Add in power steering
and TH350 three-speed automatic transmission, and you've got a
terrific total cruising package.
An amazingly preserved classic like this needs the right paperwork
to complete the package, and so this one comes with the original
window sticker, factory buildsheet, warranty card, owner's manual,
maintenance records, and Pontiac Historic Services (PHS)
documentation. That makes it a great survivor with the best
material to back it up. So when that's on one of the most desirable
Trans Ams around, you know you have to act fast to grab it. Call
