Vehicle Description
When it comes to polished customs, the collector car world has
plenty of nice classics - especially late thirties and early
forties offerings. But for every Henry Ford design that's gifted a
Mustang II front-clip and small block Chevy power, the spice and
variety that made this era the first golden age of performance
drifts one page further in to history. Thankfully, there are still
cars like this stunning '36 Chevy that remind us just how great ALL
American automakers were at the twilight of hot rodding. Powered by
a smooth Ram Jet 350, backed by a reliable 700R4 4-speed and
dressed in classy Cadillac paint, this stunning coupe epitomizes
understated American elegance. And if you're looking for a
show-worthy cruiser that puts a new shine on old school ambition,
they simply don't get nicer!
CHEVY MERIT, CADILLAC POLISH
Purchased by its current owner as a fully restored classic, this
posh Chevy was subjected to a detailed, ground-up build that was
completed by Heinzman Street Rods of Phillips, Nebraska. The
central focus of that work involved replacing the car's original
wood frame with sturdy steel. That all-steel, steel reinforced
profile was eventually covered in a rich layer of Cadillac Gold
Mist Metallic 2-stage, courtesy of Yankton, South Dakota's Mustangs
and More. And today, after roughly a $126K build tab and 2,700
hours of labor, this sweet custom looks right at home pounding
pavement at the local Goodguys meet!
Speaking of street rod shows, it's very easy to look out over a sea
of brightly colored, over-the-top creations and think: 'Was Ford
the only manufacturer of pre-war American classics?' But then,
seemingly out of nowhere, a well-done Chevrolet rolls through and
quells any doubts about the segment's apparent lack of variety.
This well-done coupe kicks off with a shaved grille shell that
centers a polished and shaved grille between stainless-trimmed Tilt
Ray headlights. Behind those lights, a shaved hood flows in to a
filled cowl, which plants polished wipers in front of a 1-piece
windshield. That screen fronts a smoked greenhouse, which reflects
re-chromed vent windows in polished hanger mirrors. Beneath those
mirrors, shaved doors cap a monochromatic profile that's accented
by a polished fuel cap. And behind that cap, a shaved trunk shades
a frenched tag, frenched taillights and polished exhaust tips.
RAM JET POWER
Behind the hood, you'll find 350 cubic inches of GM Performance
Parts Ram Jet V8 that puts the "Oh!" in show and go! Revs are
created when a polished air cleaner floats wind in to a polished
intake that's piped with multi-port fuel injection. At the
perimeter of that intake, bowtie-branded valve covers hang polished
breathers and a polished Moroso oil cap over coated, long-tube
headers. Behind those breathers, a hot distributor shoots spark
through loomed MSD Super Conductor plug wires. Just ahead of those
looms, polished Street & Performance serpentine components spin a
polished alternator opposite a polished AC compressor. At the front
of those ancillaries, a beefy radiator plays well with a polished
cap, a polished expansion tank and a giant puller fan. And, despite
being a thoroughly massaged piece, the Jet Black mill looks right
at home in the car's smoothed and body-matched engine
compartment.
THE RETRO STOPS HERE
Toss this Chevy on a lift and you'll find solid floorpans that
frame a carefully modified chassis in the clean sheen of Gloss
Black paint. Behind the smooth small block, a proven 700R4 4-speed,
sourced from Phoenix Transmission Products, twists power to a
trusted Ford nine that's stuffed with 3.55 gears. That drivetrain
pushes a triangulated 4-bar rear-clip, which cages QA-1 coil-overs
in a beefy sway bar. Opposite that clip, a Heidts SUPERIDE II
front-half stacks tubular control arms and two more coil-overs in
front of power rack-and-pinion steering. Power-assisted Wilwood
calipers squeeze vented discs to provide quick, drama-free stops.
Behind the aforementioned headers, large-diameter pipes roar
through throaty Magnaflow mufflers. And torque transitions to
pavement through polished Boyds Junkyard Dogs, which spin
205/50ZR17 Cooper Zeon Sports in front of 235/55ZR17 Cooper Zeon
Sports.
CUSTOM COMFORT
Pop this coupe's doors and you'll find $15K worth of custom cockpit
that was installed by Recovery Room Hot Rod Interiors of
Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Plush Almond buckets feature power
adjustment for the car's driver. A tasteful dash hangs sleek Dakota
Digital telemetry opposite Vintage Air conditioning and a Premier
CD player that's wired to a Premier 6-disc changer. At the base of
that dash, rich carpet floats piped floor mats between metal foot
pedals and a small console that frames a B&M Quick Silver
shifter. Opposite that island, custom side panels hang polished
handles in front of modern power windows. In front of the driver, a
polished, banjo-style steering wheel laps a polished, tilting
column. And behind the passengers, a power-operated trunk provides
a fair amount of secure storage.
