For Sale: 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190SL in Costa Mesa, California

Vehicle Description

We are offering a pristine 1962 Mercedes Benz 190sl roadster, finished in the striking and desirable color combination of black & red. This car comes complete with both hard and soft tops, matching fitted luggage, two sets of wheels, and tool kit. Garage-kept and hardly driven since its restoration, this exquisite roadster is ready to be enjoyed by its new owner, whether on the road, at Concours shows, or as part of your private collection.

“This is a standard but very late production 190SL ordered and sold new in Los Angles, California.  It was originally ordered with numerous options and finished with a white/grey body with contrasting graphite gray hubcaps and hard top.  The assembly of this 190SL began with components that had been manufactured in October and November of 1961.  The car was completed in December of 1961 and shipped the following month in January of 1962.  It was sold and delivered shortly thereafter to her first owner, Mr. Victor Jinkins who was at the time was a student at USC.  He moved to Balboa Island in Newport Beach in the early 1960s after returning to USC as a prominent Professor this time.  Not long after moving to Balboa Island, the original engine had failed prematurely.  The repairs were deemed not economically worthwhile and a replacement "warrantee" engine was fitted in its place by the original selling dealer in Los Angeles.  This engine can still be seen to this day fitted to this 190SL.  The engine still shows the correct Type Number stamps "121.921." but no individual engine number is stamped thereafter as was common on the replacement engines provided by Mercedes Benz under their warrantee program.  Jinkins continued to enjoy this Mercedes over the next 30 plus years until he became uncomfortable driving the car in his old age.  The car was then sold Thomas J. Harris of Laguna Beach, California.  In 2009 Mr. Harris commissioned a full and comprehensive restoration through the expert services of Jim Hook and his craftsman at Pacific Auto near Morro Bay, California.  The restoration and rebuild of the body was complete from front to back, top to bottom without consideration for time or expense.”

In 2015, the current owner commissioned a complete engine overhaul by Metric Motors in Los Angeles, the go-to experts for 190sl engines in Southern California, as well as other mechanical improvements such as refurbishing the original carburetors, brake booster, and any other small item that needed to be done. Much of this work was performed locally at Marx Mercedes. The results are simply outstanding with few if any equals that have ever come our way; this 190sl has been meticulously gone through and well-cared for by each owner in turn, and it will be the next owner’s pleasure to enjoy the results.

Since the completion of this restoration, this 190sl has covered set up and sorting miles only and a few additional miles thereafter commensurate with a careful program of preventative maintenance.
