Description

1971 Dodge Charger

History

The Dodge Charger (B-body) is a mid-size automobile that was produced by Dodge from 1966 to 1978, and was based on the Chrysler B platform.

The 1971 model year introduced the third generation Charger, characterized by a new split grille and more rounded "fuselage" bodystyle.

Why Is This Car Special

The Black 1971 Dodge Charger we have at Skyway Classics has a lot of improvements to help it maintain its muscle car attitude. The list of performance improvements is extensive and compliments the black paint scheme and interior too.

Mechanical Specs

To start with it has a 440 Engine with 12.5:1 compression pistons, oversize Crane Cam & ductile iron shaft rocker arms 1.5 ratio big block, Crane chrome moly pushrods, 440 Six Pack crank & rods, ported heads with oversize valves and hardened seats.
On top of that the Charger has an Edelbrock Performance RPM intake, Street Demon 850 cfm Carburetor, Edelbrock chrome air filter with Outerwear pre-filter, a new gas tank/fuel pump, Mopar chrome valve covers, Mopar Performance 4876728 Ignition, Accel 8.8mm Racing Spark Plug Wires, Heat Sleeves, and brand new spark plugs.

All this power gets to the ground via the 727 Automatic Transmission with new Cheetah Turbo Action valve body and rebuild kit, transmission cooler, center console with Pistol Grip Shifter, 8 rear end with 3:92 gears, a new 14 gauge drive shaft and universal joint.

The gasses flow out the Hooker 3" Competition Headers with a new dual exhaust system. It has a new MSD Dyna Force starter with massive cranking power of 3.4 horse and a 4.4:1 gear reduction can crank up to 17.0:1 compression, more than enough for the Charger.

Additional mods include a Griffin Aluminum radiator, new power steering box and pump, a new Brake Booster and Master Cylinder, an Optima Yellow Top Battery 870 cranking amps, with new alternator and belts.

Interior

The interior looks great and is factory correct with its Rallye dash, factory Am/Fm radio, center console, noise/heat reduction insulation reduction material, Body Armor seat belt/shoulder harnesses on both seats and Dixie Horn controller to operate the 5 trumpets out in the engine compartment. It also has a 1971 Dodge Shop Manual.

Exterior

Great body lines accent the black paint job on our Charger along with a rear "Go Wing", hood pins and new hood hinges.
Underneath the Charger has new Gabriel rear air shocks and new Gabriel shocks on the front. Good Firestone Fire Hawk SS20 225/70 R-15 tires are on the front and 225/60 R15 tires are mounted on the rear, all are mounted on 15" Mopar rims.

Conclusion

The 1971 Dodge Charger we have at Skyway Classics is a great example of how 1971 Dodge Chargers were modified back in the day to outperform the other brands of muscle cars. Ours has done that and done it well. It is very powerful and fast, and also well built and dependable for cruises and trips to the track.
