Vehicle Description
This 1986 Ford Mustang GT convertible has the features and you'd
want in a frequent driver, as well as the numbers-matching cachet
we prize in classic cars. It's had the good fortune to have been
kept away from extreme temperatures and corrosive roads and would
be a great acquisition that will take you wherever you want to go
in open-air style.
Repainted in correct code 2R Bright Red, it is an undeniably
appealing color, and it combines with a contrasting black hood and
molding that runs the lengths of its sides before merging with the
bumpers in front and back to make this a very sharp-looking third
generation Mustang. Having never locked horns with another car or
obstacle, its alignment remains on point, so some 30-plus years
after its life began, it still sports nice even gaps between body
panels and very straight bumpers. When the weather demands, the
power white convertible top raises into place without incident from
its perch in back to shield you from the elements and it seals well
and even features an impressively clear glass window in back. When
the sun prevails, there's a new-looking convertible top boot on
hand to provide a finished look.
The two-tone interior provides a really nice driving environment,
with the white of the seating and door panels providing a great
contrast to the dash area, and fresh-looking carpet sitting below.
Bucket seats from this era of Mustangs have long been prized as
restomod transplants, due to their balance of comfort and support,
and you can see that the specimens here fit that mold, looking
especially plush and still showing a lot of padding, with no
splayed bolsters to be found. There are some welcome comfort and
convenience features on hand, including air conditioning -
especially rare in convertibles of this era - as well as cruise
control, power locks and power windows. A Pioneer AM/FM/CD player
fits nicely in the space previously occupied by its factory
counterpart and it stands ready to attend to your audio needs while
out on the road. The dash area up front has weathered the years
especially well - peer through the steering wheel and you'll see an
assortment of very readable gauges in the cluster and if you look a
little higher you'll see that there are no cracks on the dash
pad.
Raise the hood and you'll find a 5.0 liter V8 sitting front and
center in an unusually clean engine bay. It fires up promptly and
runs strong, pairing with a 5-speed manual transmission to provide
a compelling, hands-on experience from behind the wheel. Ford
wisely chose to fortify a couple of drivetrain components the very
year this drop top came out, so there's a beefier clutch up front
and an 8.8" rear end in back that are far sturdier than their
predecessors from even a year before. The featured power steering
and power brakes - with discs up front - make for easy navigation
and fade-resistant stopping power. Take a look at the undercarriage
below and you'll see solid floorpans and suspension components that
serve as additional proof of this Mustang's roadworthiness. This
well-equipped '80s drop top classic sits on 15" stock Mustang rims
that are outfitted with a set of very fresh blackwall radials.
