HISTORY OF THE DE TOMASO MANGUSTA
The Mangusta was first offered in 1967. Designed by the great
Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time at Carrozzeria Ghia in Turin,
the Mangusta showcased the classic Italian wedge shape. Featuring a
heavily reinforced chassis based on the Vallelunga, the Mangusta
was equipped with a mid-mounted Ford V8 behind the passenger
compartment. Access was granted by a set of gullwing doors which
concealed the engine and manual ZF 5-speed transaxle. In North
American specification, the model utilized the 5.0 liter 302ci V8,
tuned to 230 horsepower. Suspension was fully independent and disc
brakes were at all four corners while steering was especially
responsive courtesy of a rack and pinion steering gear. The
interior was dressed in full leather and featured full
instrumentation which added to the race car feel. The Mangusta
offered supercar level performance with incredibly stylish Italian
flair. It is no wonder why examples today have been highly
sought-after by collectors. With only 401 built until 1971 and only
around 250 known to exist recently, Mangustas have been
increasingly difficult to procure, especially in finely restored,
original specification condition.
