Vehicle Description
If you grew up around cars, "LS6" was probably one of those terms
that, along with "Hemi" and "Super Cobra Jet", meant something very
special way before you could properly define it. Thankfully, the
significance of those names only grows with education, making
classics like this incredible Chevelle Super Sport all the more
desirable. Documented by an original Window Sticker, an original
Protect-O-Plate and two original Build Sheets, this
numbers-matching A-body is the beneficiary of an extensive,
professional restoration that enabled better-than-factory glory.
And, featuring all-important options such as posi-trac, an F41
suspension and desirable Cranberry Red paint, it virtually spells
"investment grade". If you're ready to add one of the most sought
after muscle cars in the world to your collection, this awesome SS
LS6 will pay you back time and time again!
APPEARANCE/CONDITION
The coolest dash of red to hail from Kansas since Dorothy's ruby
slippers, this stunning Super Sport is the beneficiary of a
body-off, professional restoration that was conducted by Jen Jac's
Classic Auto in Savannah, Georgia. That 2006 rebuild coordinated
hours of professional metalwork, which resulted in a super straight
profile. That clean presentation was layered in correct Cranberry
Red base, accented with correct Classic White stripes and sealed in
glossy clear. And today, mere break-in miles after its
roof-to-rocker makeover, this top dog coupe rolls as one
spectacular piece of iconic American muscle that's detailed to
award-winning standards.
Many enthusiasts believe the '70 Chevelle introduced a host of
excellent refinements that transformed the 'good' design of
Chevrolet's 1969 model into something 'great'. At the front of this
vivid classic, a familiar crossbar grille hangs a prominent "SS"
emblem between authentic T3 headlights, a small "CHEVELLE" script
and a broad chrome bumper. At the sides of that bumper, bright
"SS454" badges combine with straight wheel frames, traditional door
handles and optional edge guards to add visual detail to the car's
liquid-smooth profile. Above that profile, a functional Cowl
Induction Hood anchors traditional lanyards in front of clean
glass, a small mirror and a correct vinyl roof. And behind that
roof, a second chrome bumper centers a black Super Sport inlay
between clear tail lamps, a classy "Chevelle by Chevrolet" script
and spotless stainless exhaust tips.
ENGINE
Although the 1970 Super Sport's ferocious Turbo-Jet V8 was
conservatively rated at 450 horsepower, it actually punched the
dyno somewhere north of 500. And, according to its familiar 3963512
casting number, correct "CRR" suffix stamp and matching partial
VIN, this classic's original LS6 still resides in its rightful
home. Engage the hood's Cast Gray springs and you'll find a correct
cowl induction system that's cleanly integrated into a completely
finished, Satin Black frame. At the center of that frame, a
correctly decaled single-snorkel air cleaner forces oxygen in to a
big Holley carburetor and correct Winters intake. At the back of
that intake, a traditional points distributor snakes sparks around
mirrored valve covers via high quality Packard TV R Suppression
cables. Below those cables, correct exhaust manifolds and old
school emissions hardware add value and exclusivity. And in front
of that hardware, fresh GM hoses channel water with the help of a
correct radiator and reproduction tower clamps. Naturally, the
Chevy Orange big block was completely overhauled during the car's
extensive restoration. And everything around the monster mill, from
the fresh Delco battery topper all the way to the bright inspection
marks, looks much nicer than anything that left GM's factories.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
As you might expect, this coupe's road-ready chassis has been
restored to the same high standards as the aforementioned body
panels and engine compartment. A nice coat of Satin Black paint
provides a great foundation for a slew of factory-accurate details.
Behind the stout powerplant, an original, "CY" coded
Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed sends power to a correct posi-traction
rear end and friendly, 3.31 gears. That killer drivetrain roles on
a completely restored F41 Special Performance Suspension, which,
per the factory, is equipped with thicker coils, heavy duty shocks,
mandatory sway bars, boxed rear control arms and beefy cross
braces. At the edges of that suspension, correct power steering
combines with power front disc and rear drum brakes to provide
greatly improved handling. Between those brakes, fried dinosaurs
travel through a fresh, true-dual exhaust system that's complete
with Walker Quiet-Flow 3 mufflers. The 454's power spins through
14-inch Super Sport wheels, which twist old school F70-14 Firestone
Wide Ovals around correct SS center caps. And, as expected, the
bottom of this Chevelle is pristine in every way, with every square
inch of the car's fully sorted hardware completely detailed for
show.
INTERIOR
Featuring a host of new components, and decked in correct Red
vinyl, this Chevelle's professionally restored interior is inviting
and comfortable. Its slick bench and bucket seats are firm to the
touch, showing no signs of detrimental wear and tear. In front of
those seats, a crack-free dash features a full set of Deluxe
gauges. Below that dash, clean carpet centers a full console and
correct horseshoe shifter between bright Fisher sills and heavy
duty floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, pick-free door panels
align spotless stainless trim and prerequisite "MALIBU" emblems on
bright chrome handles and pliable red armrests. In front of the
driver, a handsome Chevrolet Rally Wheel keeps everything pointed
straight. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk anchors
a correct jack and full-size spare beneath a dressed and decaled
decklid.
PROVENANCE
In Chevelle land, it's hard to find a no-excuses Super Sport simply
because, for most years, GM didn't code the SS option in to the
car's VIN or Cowl Tag. That means this vivid coupe is all the more
significant since the car's accompanying documentation both
authenticates its status as a real-deal LS6 and confirms the
accuracy of its restoration. Here's a look at how this Chevy rolled
in to Pat Manning Chevrolet in Marshalltown, Iowa:
