Introduced in 1953, Chevrolet’s Corvette was intended to serve as
America’s sports car, battling against competition from the world’s
most famous marques, but it took some time before the performance
on the road was able to live up to the marketing hype. By the time
that 1961 arrived, however, there was no question of the Corvette’s
place among the best sports cars in the world, but its visual
appearance was due for a change. The rounded rear end that had been
in place since the original was replaced by a ‘duck tail’ that
promised better aerodynamic advantage and a more contemporary
profile. A different grille also appeared along with body coloured
blanks between the dual headlamps. With a host of engine options
and unquestioned potency under the hood, these later C1s are among
the most desirable Corvettes ever built and continue to pace the
collector’s market.
The Motorcar Offered
Owned by a very prominent collector in Salt Lake City, this 1961
Corvette Convertible was professionally restored to the highest
possible standard, which was validated with an NCRS Top Flite®
Award. The original 283/230 (4BBL) powerplant was rebuilt using
internal components of the best quality and it continues to run
powerfully and smoothly. Although a 4-speed manual transmission was
added during the restoration to improve drivability, the original
stock unit is included under the terms of the sale. Finished in the
iconic Corvette livery of red with white coves, this example is a
visual and mechanical tour de force offered at
investment grade quality.
