After more than a century of superb automotive craftmanship, Mercedes-Benz continues to be heralded as one of the premier automobile innovators, delivering vehicle of superior performance and style.
This two-seater roadster/coupe was produced from 1963 through 1971. The W113SL had a distinctive slightly concave hardtop, hence the name “Pagoda”. This coupe/roadster has a soft-top and the original removable “Pagoda” hardtop. This model is equipped with an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection.
The hood, trunk lid, outer door panels and tonneau cover are aluminum to reduce weight. Powerful brakes, radial tires and wide chassis gives this 280SL great handling. The front grille has the dominant three-point star centered between Bosch “fishbowl” headlights. This model has a rigid passenger compartment and designated crumple zones with impact absorbing front and rear sections.
This was the first sports car with a safety body and interior corner. Edges were rounded as per Bela Barney’s design.
The red paint is bright and clear. The original tan convertible top has been replaced with a newer one with no holes or tears. The matching red “Pagoda Roof” is original and in nice condition with minor staining on headliner. All panels including doors, trunk and hood lineup and fit well. The dash is nicely preserved and the instruments are clear. The original seats are very nice with no tears except for some wrinkles.
The undercarriage is original and shows wear however the exhaust system has recently been replaced. The car drives well with a smooth shifting gearbox and responsive clutch petal. The disc brakes are responsive ensuring the car will stop straight.
This rare find is finished in great colors and should give great driving pleasure to its new owner in a car that is a rare find and coveted by any Mercedes Benz owner.
