Vehicle Description
It's not often that a car featuring direct lineage to arguably the
most iconic car chase in cinematic history becomes available. That
opportunity becomes rarer still when the car in question features
unusually low mileage, greets the present day in very clean
condition, and even arrives with a clean history report in tow to
confirm that it's avoided any notable collisions over the years.
Yet that's the very opportunity this 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt GT
offers.
The Highland Green metallic shade mirrors the shade of the Mustang
390 GT Lt. Frank Bullitt drove in that folkloric movie, and it's in
very nice shape on this '08 - certainly low mileage has its
benefits. However, color isn't the only direct visual homage to its
cinematic inspiration. With no chrome in sight, and only the badged
brushed aluminum fuel door to contrast with its verdant color and
bereft of the usual GT spoiler and badging, this is a
special-looking performance car that exudes cool, yet doesn't try
too hard in doing so. Had the Lieutenant been enforcing the law
about 40 years later, this very likely would have been his car of
choice. Thankfully, it's been left in stock configuration and is
looking just as street-ready as you could want. Ten years after
first greeting the road, its paint retains a nice even shine,
you'll find clear glass on all four sides, surrounded by rubber
seals that still look fresh and, having avoided any accidents over
the years, it's retained the alignment it rolled off the assembly
line with.
Open the door, climb inside and you'll immediately see some
distinctions that set this black leather interior apart from the
Mustang norm of the time. By virtue of its special edition status,
it features both front seats and a steering wheel inspired by
Mustang GT-500s. Look just beyond the Bullitt-badged steering wheel
and you'll see a specially configured, textured aluminum dash panel
running the width of the cabin, and an instrument cluster whose
gauges feature a font very similar to those of classic Mustangs.
While the Lieutenant likely preferred quiet as he embarked on his
high-speed pursuits, your audio needs will be well looked after via
the Shaker 1000 AM/FM/CD/Cassette system sitting front and center
in the dash to power the array of speakers, including a set of
subwoofers securely placed in the trunk - which remains in good
order. The comfort features you'd want in a frequent driver are all
present and accounted for here, including air conditioning that's
blowing nice and cold, cruise control, power seats, power door
locks and power windows. Dual airbags are a welcome safety
feature.
The 4.6 liter V8 sitting under the hood benefits from some factory
tuning tweaks to offer more horsepower than the standard-issue GTs
of its era and, combined with a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission
and live axle, features the improved acceleration to match. A
K&N filter has been added here to feed the powerplant a supply
of cold, dense air, so this Mustang takes that power a step
further. With only about 12,000 miles logged in its lifetime, this
engine is just hitting its prime. Turn the key and fire it up, and
that deep throaty sound you'll hear has been configured to mimic
its big block inspiration via a tuned exhaust. This very
collectible and fun to drive performance car rides just a tad lower
than its GT counterparts on a set of special edition 18" Bullitt
wheels outfitted BF Goodrich T/A radials.
