For Sale: 1964 Aston Martin DB5 in Stratford, Connecticut

Vehicle Description

The silhouette of the DB5 is the one most people picture when they think of vintage examples of this iconic marque – Aston Martin. Words like sophisticated, refined, define every aspect of the design. That’s surprising since only 1,021 of these desirable automobiles were ever produced. Our example is even scarcer since it’s one of 123 convertibles and just one of 39 that were built with left-hand drive.

DB5s of this period have all of the latest technical improvements of the series. This includes items like Girling brakes, power window lifts, a ZF 5 speed and negative earth charging system. More important, the powerful 4-liter engine is the latest iteration of the Tadek-Marek design.

Our DB5 left the factory painted British Racing Green over tan leather. ARI’s thorough inspection and examination of prior owner receipts show that DB5/C/1520/L has had a significant amount of mechanical repair performed throughout its life along with light cosmetic attention. The engine is smooth and quiet in all gears. A leak down test showed less than 14% in any cylinder. An oil analysis report is also available for a prospective client. Engine liner drains in the block are not showing signs of weeping. Our road tests confirm that this example drives well and does not feel worn or tired in any respect.

Items like paint, metal plating and door and window seals are a mix of older and recently addressed items. The overall impression of the car is of a generally acceptable, uniform, drivable classic.

The paint finish is good commercial quality but not up to Concours standards. The leather interior has German, not Connolly hides and shows some wear and patina. Also, the carpet is nylon, not the factory Wilton wool coverings. Several other items like the door entry sills and dash are incorrectly refinished in vinyl.

The tan Stayfast cloth top usable but shows wear and has visible stains.

Unusual for a convertible DB5, this car came with the rare option of air-conditioning. Many of the air-conditioning components and plumbing are still with the car but a compressor will have to be sourced to make the system functional.

Engine and underbody finishes are presentable but as stated before, not up to Concours standards. Metalwork and structural repairs are sound but not to factory original standards regarding original seams, pattern, and design. Inner sills show evidence of over-patching and some internal bracing that was not addressed at the time of the prior repairs. It is our opinion that correction of all of the metal work done in prior repairs would mandate major disassembly, proper metal restorations, and a bare metal re-spray to achieve a Concours standard.

This rare Aston Martin is exceptionally rare and has the potential to be a fun and exciting vintage rally driver or, with proper attention to the items we have outlined, an outstanding collectible with investment potential.

Please call us to discuss and set up an appointment to see what is an exceptionally rare Aston Martin automobile.
