For Sale: 1968 Ford Mustang in Santa Monica, California

Vehicle Description

1968 Mustang Convertible Numbers Matching X Code

In the Mustang market today of Recreations, Resto-mods, Eleanor and Shelby Clones you do not find too many original numbers matching Mustangs. This is not only an opportunity to acquire one of these but to have a one of one.

In mid year of 1968 Ford decided to do a test market of their 390 V-8 with a 2 Barrel Carburetor. These were produced as a premium fuel, high compression engine. All of them only available with a C-6 Automatic Transmission. Out of a total production run of 317,423 Mustangs, Ford produced 733 of these cars, 477 Coupes, 189 Fastbacks and 67 Convertibles. At the time the car buying public was not interested in fuel savings and stayed with picking the S Code 390 4V for a minor up-charge. Ford ceased production of the X code 2V package and it was NEVER DONE AGAIN. This car is equipped with Power Steering, Power Top and Power Disc Brakes in the front (converted from factory Drum) and factory Manual Drum Brakes in the rear. As you will see the car also retains most of the metal ID tags through out different parts. IE: Rear end, steering gear box, underside of interior seats.

How it all started:

Purchased the car from a gentleman in Arizona that did a ground up restoration of the car. He purchased the car from a gentleman in a very small Arizona town who moved there from Utah. The story from him was that this car had belonged to his father who passed away in 1990 and that's when he acquired it. It sat in garages over the next 24 years with just a drive around the block now and then. The car still retained a Utah license plate and Title, last registered in 2009. He had already started to modify the car by installing an aftermarket 4V intake and carb. Also he installed a Dual Point Distributor. Fortunately he retained the original 2V intake, bad news is the carb and distributor was gone. At one point in its life the interior was redone in white. Other than those issues the car was very much unmolested and original to include its factory paint. 73,824 original miles.

The Refurbish Process:

The car was taken completely apart and every item was either refurbished and or replaced. The car retained a lot of its factory markings, which was documented in order to re-produce. The bottom of the car was only cleaned, the undercarriage retains its factory red oxide primer and the factory paint runs. The floors are original and solid. The lower rear quarter panels and trunk drops were replaced to fix a bad repair job in the past. Also replaced was the rear light panel for the same reason. The rear valance and rear deck lid are replaced. All other body panels are the original parts. Car was painted in PPG base coat, clear coat system. Not a Show car, not perfect, some imperfections in the paint.
