Aston Martin's plan with the V8 Vantage was to create a competitor
for the Porsche 911, but this 2009 Aston Martin Vanquish is so much
more car. Show up in a 911, and everyone says, "Oh, look, another
Porsche like that one over there." But show up in THIS car, and,
well, people start to think you're a pro athlete or a celebrity of
some kind. Don't worry, we won't tell them how that you got it for
half the original price.
The great thing about the Vantage is that it benefits from all the
handling and suspension found on the top-of-the-line Vanquish, the
same dramatic styling, and a more tossable, compact package. For
drivers who really push their cars to the limit, this might be THE
Aston to own. With 5.5 inches less wheelbase and more than a foot
shorter than the 2+2 Aston Martin models, it looks like the
gorgeous sheetmetal has been pulled taut over its muscles leaving
very little wasted material. Finishing it Meteorite Silver only
emphasizes the sinewy body lines that are unmistakably British and
unquestionably expensive, making for one of the most beautiful cars
you'll ever see. Showing 30,530 original miles, that miles-deep
paint still looks spectacular, proving that you really do get what
you pay for and that nothing else can match old-fashioned hand
labor when it comes to finishing automobiles.
There's more evidence inside that Aston was serious about
performance when they built the Vantage. The chocolate brown
leather seats are exquisitely finished with the finest materials
and yes those bolsters are definitely required. Forget wood and
chrome, the high-tech interior is full of modern materials that
choose weight savings over cosmetics, although every single
component is beautifully crafted by hand. The instrument panel is
centered exactly so it's visible through the spokes of the fat
leather-wrapped steering wheel and alight with an icy blue glow
when you press the big START button in the center of the dash.
There's very little wear on the driver's seat, even on the
high-traffic outer bolster area, and the wool carpets are still
just as plush as they were when it was new. Obviously this was
never a foul-weather machine, and if you could afford this car when
it was new, then you could afford to have someone look after it
properly. There's actually a decent trunk, but that's not really a
priority in your Aston Martin, now is it?
The Vantage was extensively upgraded for the 2009 model year, most
notably the larger 4.7 liter DOHC V8. With 420 horsepower and 346
pounds of torque it's docile around town and ferocious when you cut
it loose. The rear-mounted 6-speed transaxle gives it almost
perfect weight distribution, and thanks to massive Brembo brakes
all around, you'll never run out of stopping power. It starts with
a raw bark and settles into a rumbling V8 idle that's simply
sublime at speed and it pulls without effort to its screaming 7500
RPM redline. The Sports Pack suspension is supple, yet capable,
making this a car you can drive every day if you want. The
undercarriage is quite clean, so it's obvious that the last owner
used it only in good weather, and there are no signs of damage,
neglect, or modifications. Gorgeous 19-inch forged alloy wheels
show off those big brakes to great effect and wear staggered
235/45/19 front and 275/35/19 rear Michelin Pilot radials.
With a sticker price of nearly $180,000 and a waiting list of
nearly three years to get one, this Vantage was a special car when
it was new, and even more so today at a deeply discounted price.
