Carroll Shelby, who had won the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans with Aston
Martin and driven factory racers for Austin-Healey and Maserati,
gained everlasting fame when he mated an American Ford engine with
a British-built sports car from AC to create the immortal Cobra.
Always looking for an opportunity, Shelby leveraged his
relationship with Ford to manufacture modified Mustangs that were
sanctioned by the factory and sold through selected authorized
dealerships. The first Shelby Mustang arrived in 1965 and became a
legend, but the second generation upped the performance ante with
the installation of the 428 cid Cobra Jet Big Block V-8. First
built at Shelby’s Los Angeles-based facility, production moved to
A. O. Smith’s factory in Ionia, Michigan. Most experts consider
these genuine rarities to be ultimate muscle cars and rapid
continued appreciation seems to validate those opinions. This is
surely one to drive and enjoy while it continues to increase in
value over time.
The Motorcar Offered
This Shelby GT500 was purchased through a home office special order
(No. 2505) that specified a Traction-Lock differential with 3.50:1
gears, C6 automatic transmission, power steering, and front disc
brakes. Less than 300 miles have been covered since a comprehensive
restoration that allowed for the installation of a few discrete
enhancements, which can easily be reversed to allow the car to be
shown at the national Concours d’Elegance level. Among the changes
are a 5-speed Tremec T-5 manual transmission, FiTech fuel
injection, and four-core aluminium radiator with twin electric
cooling fans. Fully documented with its build sheet from Shelby
American and a deluxe level Marti Report, this is a remarkable
automobile that will attract interest wherever it is driven or
shown.
Estimate: $150,000-160,000
