Vehicle Description
History
1957 saw a lot of brand new designs that really wowed the American
buying public. A couple of classics that still stand out as very
desirable cars from that year are the 57 Chevy and the 57 Ford
Victoria.
Each had a lot of special features and design ideas. The Ford had
not only flashy news looks on its body but increased power options
too. This model was very successful, being the best selling car in
America, overtaking arch rival Chevrolet for the first time since
1935.
The 1957 models retained a single-headlight front end like their
predecessors, but were unmistakable with their long flanks and
tail-fins. The new chassis allowed the floor to be placed much
lower, which in turn led to a lower and longer look overall.
The V8 lineup included a 272 CI Y-block making 190 hp, a 292 CID
Thunderbird version making 212 hp, a 312 cubic inch V8 making 245
HP and a supercharged 312 CI Thunderbird Special making 300 hp, and
designated "Police Interceptor" on the glove box.
Features & Options
The one we have at Skyway Classics has a jet-black exterior and the
bold red and white interior. The body has brilliant chrome front
and rear bumpers, the two headlights with chrome trim accents above
them, chrome trim down the sides, black painted to match rear
fender covers, whitewall tires, chrome wheel covers on red painted
wheels.
The dashboard looks nice but still pleasingly simple. A slightly
curved "strip" speedometer flanked by fuel and engine temperature
gauges forms an arc under a wider instrument "visor" just ahead of
the deep-dish red steering wheel. The vinyl interior is superb just
like the painted red dash and side panels. You will be shifting the
"three-on-the-tree shifter mounted on the column just as it was
from the dealer showroom.
An updated stereo system with Sony speakers can belt out all of
those 50s songs you remember when you drive this 57 Ford to the
drive-in restaurant.
The detailed engine compartment features the "Thunderbird Special"
312 cubic inch engine making 245 horsepower, which was a lot back
in its day! It looks just like it drove off the showroom floor with
it's factory parts intake like air cleaner, valve covers, exhaust
manifolds, and red painted block.
The 1957 Ford garnered glowing reviews back then like Motor Trend
Magazine's Road Test. After testing a Fairlane with standard shift
and the 245-horsepower Thunderbird Special V8, the editors
reported: "From 0 to 60 it took 9.5 seconds (two seconds quicker
than last year's Fordomatic-equipped test car), which is real rapid
time in anyone's book.
