For Sale: 1973 Volkswagen Thing in Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Vehicle Description

All vehicle trades considered, including classics and performance.  I can assist with financing and transport as needed.

Is there any vehicle more aptly named than the Thing?  This creation from Volkswagen is one of the most unique vehicles in the automotive world; it definitely has a look all its own.  Still, it shares a basic construction and drivetrain with one of the most popular vehicles of all time, keeping things simple and reliable – and fun.

This 1973 model is made even more unique by its remarkable condition and a few modifications.  To begin, this example comes from California where it lived an easy rust-free life.  Front-to-back and top-to-bottom, the sheetmetal is fantastic with the only exception being a small patch under the battery area.  The orange paint is also in great condition, as are the black top and side curtains.

This Thing is further distinguished by a 3” body lift coupled with Robby Gordon aluminum wheels and Hercules all-terrain tires.  This really gets away from the pedestrian factory look and creates a much more rugged image.  There is also a front mount for towing behind a motorhome (easy to do with the 2,000 pound curb weight).

The 1.6L engine has been rebuilt with less than 5,000 miles since.  This powerplant will not win many drag races but is a proven, reliable setup found throughout the world.  The clutch and 4-speed transmission operate smoothly and make for an easy drive.  The brakes, steering, and suspension are all in great condition as well.

The interior is quite Spartan but in very good condition.  The seats have been recovered and the roll bar has a foam surround.  The rear flip-down seats work smoothly and allow extra storage space.  This Thing also has the Eberspacher BN-4 gas heater (nice to have with an air-cooled engine).  There is also a Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo.

This Thing just looks like a good time waiting to happen, and I don’t think you’ll find another example quite like it.  Whether you simply want to cruise around town or would rather flip open the top, turn up the music, and head down to the beach, you will not go unnoticed in this one.
