Gateway Classic Cars is proud to present this 1949 Oldsmobile 88.
The B-Body Futuramatic platform was launched by Oldsmobile in 1949,
the 88 shared this platform with the 76. This is where the
similarities end as the 88 was fitted with the brand new Rocket 303
CID V8, which pumped out 135hp. This is widely considered to the
first muscle car by many with its small light body fitted with a
powerful engine. The 88 propelled Oldsmobile from a mundane car to
a major competitor on the track and considered the first true "King
of Nascar" as it dominated the circuit for several years. During
the era of "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday", this car was popular
with many veterans in a post World War II economy. The 88 inspired
the slogan "Make a date with a Rocket 88" and well as also inspired
a song proving itself to be a true pop culture icon of its time.
The 88 lasted through the late 1990's. The 49 model year was
equipped with an ignition key and push-button starter. This example
has been completely restored in 2010, and received new chrome in
2013. Featuring a 1970 model year Rocket 350 engine mated to a
TH350 transmission this car is a real pleasure to drive with lots
power. With just 5,000 miles on the motor it is hardly past its
break in period. This car features leather interior, am/fm radio,
cd player, ride control, rally wheels, radial tires, and even an
air ride suspension. This car is really on gorgeous ride with just
the right lines to take you back in time as you cruise down the
road, yet still enjoying modern comforts. This 1949 Oldsmobile 88
